Another mass shooting in Florida..good dem guns
In general terms:

The USA has the highest per capita civilian ownership of firearms in the world (well over 300 million).
The USA has 5% of the world's population.
The USA has less than 2% of the mass shootings.

https://nypost.com/2018/08/30/america-doesnt-actually-lead-the-world-in-mass-shootings/

All in all, the USA is doing very well in preserving both its historic freedoms and public safety. Perhaps your time would be better spent working to get your own house in order before criticizing the USA?

Amo, I don't think child proofing (or idiot proofing) society leads to any outcome other than disaster. I think the data is clear that the USA has a good balance between freedom and security. And if push comes to shove, I'll always err on the side of liberty.

I get the self defence bit in a large and (by UK standards) sparsely populated country but no way should a military assault weapon be allowed in civilians hands no matter about liberty.

A semi-automatic weapon is not a military assault weapon.

What about the right for innocent bystanders not to get gunned down by madmen armed with assault rifles? Is that unconstitutional?
Then they are well advised to remain in the USA, where the chances of that happening is well below the world average.

I don't care what country anyone is in, guns apart from farmers/police/army etc should be banned and anyone carrying should get a 25 year hard labour sentence .
Only cowards carry guns and knives

Still OTT for the job and difficult to keep in a glove compartment. But assault weapons are readily available over there aren't they steve?

Unfortunately they lost eh? But Ive been impressed by the younger Vietnamese squad the last couple of tournaments. They are decent outside bets for World Cup qualification next time.

Meanwhile another generation of Korean players have got their military exemption. Son Heung-min looked like he was going to explode he was that happy!

And what is an ‘assault’ weapon? The military defines it as something more than a semi-automatic weapon- specifically a selective fire weapon. A semi-automatic weapon is not an assault weapon.

Newscasters and other who don’t have a clue (but I repeat myself) apply it to any weapon which looks dangerous.

Yeah they played very well and should have won it, lost on pens. Three different TV people interviewed me thinking I would have some great insight into football being from Europe and all. They picked the wrong man .

You never really answered my question.

What does a civilian need with a semi-automatic?
Your wasting your time, is like telling a English man he can't have beer anymore. Worked there long enough to know it is engrained in them. No matter how strong your argument is it is their right. We all know guns are bad but it will never change.
