I was disappointed Tomasson didn't address our defensive issues, particularly in his final few months at the club. My gut feeling is that he tried to stick to a style that was meant to go with the financial plan in spite of the plan collapsing. I felt that this persistence in sticking to a style that our squad simply couldn't sustain when funding was lacking, namely the high intense nature of it, was detrimental to our league position in the last few months.
I certainly don't hate him. He was a breath of fresh air when he arrived, and in the right circumstances, i.e., if the club was able to reasonably fund a better quality squad that could sustainably carry out a controlled and intense style over the course of a season, then I think he would have had us into the top six.
But we are, as always, at the behest of our owners and their circumstances. It seemed to me that, on the pitch, Tomasson didn't adapt to the players he had at his disposal. We conceded for fun far too often for it to be true that we really were working on set-pieces, aerial battles, a structured defence, and so on. For me, that's on him. Tactics is about doing what you can with what you have, and at least towards the end, I didn't see much evidence that he was doing that.
I hope he does well, but all I really care about is Rovers and picking up points. I'm not convinced Tomasson had those same cares by the end of his time here.
