What, a bigger club offered him a lot more money? Nothing concerning there!

Depends on the rules and the situation I suppose. Youth teams registrations are complicated and I'l be honest I've no idea on the letter of the law in that area. I seem to recall a rule change a few years ago that was being reported as favouring the big clubs as usual. Maybe simply paying the Academy's cost of his development is sufficient these days to allow poaching of youth team players. I does mention that we only signed Sam Barnes as full time pro so maybe if we'd signed Winterbottom on a professional contract too the rules would have changed and Lpool would have had to pay much more or walk away.
Financially perhaps with Mowbray intent on bringing an experienced keeper in, having 4 full time pro goalkeepers might have been out of our reach.
One recent development though is that Simon Mignolet is apparently being targeted by Bournemouth so whilst I can't imagine Lpool going with an 18 year old as main back up to Allison the door might be opening faster than previously thought for young Winterbottom.
