Just a few thoughts after reading this and which don't appear to have been addressed at all by Emily McGarvey in her article.

What makes Abed and his family so different from the rest of the population of Syria? What if they all decided they wanted to live over here?
Why did he choose to cross all of Europe for the UK?
What did Abed do for a living to support his large family in the past?
Will Abed be returned when Syria is deemed safe at some point in the future?
What is he doing now to support himself and his family financially? Should we not have Government schemes for these people to be employed in tidying the nation up for example? With roadside verges unkempt, walls crumbling away, potholes and litter everywhere surely these people could be organised to repay their obligations to the nation?
Finally what sort of a person flees a country and abandons a wife and seven children? I can only think it might apply to someone guilty of a crime of sorts. That definitely needs investigating. Was Abed a thief? Was he perhaps guilty of a sex crime? A murder or killing perhaps? Arson? etc etc. Do we actually investigate who is coming into this nation and if so how do we do so to what degree of accuracy?
