Well he's getting the nickname " kit kat " fingers . You're right Gordon , I think he needs to look at the effectiveness of his gloves but when a 160 gramme hard missile is heading for your fingers at 90 miles an hour , there's a balance between the amount of protection in the gloves to protect your fingers and being being able to hold the bat in comfort .

Batting gloves are now the best they have ever been but if you want to retain some flexibility in the fingers there is very little known that can protect a thin bit of bone against being crushed when a 6 ounce piece of rubber, cork, string and leather hits it at 90mph with a lump of wood behind it. Something has to give.

Joe Root (captain), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Jake Ball, Gary Ballance, Stuart Broad, Alastair Cook, Mason Crane, Ben Foakes, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton, Ben Stokes, Mark Stoneman, James Vince, Chris Woakes.

I think it tells us all we need to know about the dearth of decent batters in County Cricket with the recalls of Gary Ballance ( again !) and James Vince . Having said that I'm cheered by the inclusion of Foakes , Crane and Overton . Unlikely they'll get much cricket but a good experience for them.

If Ben Stokes is found guilty of causing actual bodily harm, his punishment should be transportation to the colonies for 3 months to run concurrently with the Ashes tour !

How can we take Foakes as a rookie backup to Bairstow but not find alternative batsmen to perennial failures like Ballance and Vince?

Says a lot about the selectors to me.

On paper it would seem a good idea to promote Ali up the order but experience tells us for some unknown reason he does not appear to prosper there. It's a shame that Ballance and Malan appear to be in the side purely to make the numbers up.

Excellent victory for Lancashire against a strong Surrey line-up . I think the win confirms that they'll finish second to Essex in the County Championship. I expected them to be fighting a relegation battle this year , so more than pleased with the season's work and what I see as over achievement from a workmanlike team.

We could be entering a golden period where Lancashire rightly compete with the likes of Surrey and Yorkshire , as the big boys in County Cricket. Off the field developments ( the Point and the new Hilton hotel) will bring in much needed commercial income to support the cricket side . The recent signings of Keaton Jennings and Graham Onions are testament to bigger spending power .

All in all ,looking good for the Red Rose !

Yes a bit of a shock for Middlesex , last season's champions .

The fact that two teams from eight can be relegated from the County Championship puts almost every team in danger . Lancashire who finished second on 176 points were 72 points behind first placed Essex but only 30 points in front of relegated Middlesex.
