Lets go even back a bit further when Mr Barrett was part of the Floyd:
Cracking riff this one! Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but the first album is astonishing in my opinion.

Great Rock n Roll but JLL makes me more than a little squeamish. Am I alone in thinking Operation Yew Tree or the US equivalent would have scuppered his escapades with his bigamous marriage to his 13 year old cousin.

Scott McKenzie has aged that's for sure.

Also I can assure our younger members that not all female hippies looked like those!:imp:

Now your talking dave!

Normally music has to grow on me but occasionally a 'record' turns up that I recognise as an instant mega hit and heralds a new artist. Maggie May is the best example in my lifetime (Virginia Plain / Roxy another which had the same effect). No disrespect to the above version but this is the one which 'blew me away' all those years ago the first time I saw it in '71 on TOTP, also imo the best. Fresh, raw and innocent back in the day. Poor old Ronnie Lane (RIP), and Kenney Jones from the Small Faces plus Ronnie Wood and a cameo appearance by John Peel (RIP again) on the mandolin.

Superb band canned heat. Seemed to reflect the great spirit of those times didn't they?
Unfortunately it is my opinion that many took 'hippy culture' far too seriously and when all those hippies turned into parents their legacy spawned a new liberal generation of 'n'er do wells'.
The hippy culture seemed to be the tipping point although those old enough to remember might even say it's roots were in the rock and roll era.
Also as fas as our nation is concerned the first appearance of the hated university educated 'career politicians' seemed to coincide with that era.
