I think I would agree with that Drog, once drove to Spain in that beast in one go, got out fresh as a daisy

Al.... wash your mouth out for daring to mention them in the same breath!:p

btw if I was retired and doing few miles I'd look for something like that merc. Second hand Audi A8's / Merc 500's and BMW 7 series drop loads of money in quick time but they have everything needed to ferry one around in the lap of luxury and beat these little hatchbacky type things into a cocked hat. All time fave would be a VW Phaeton! What a machine that is. A Passatt on steroids... proper wolf in sheeps clothing that few have ever even heard of and fewer still would even notice on the road. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Phaeton

I would steer clear of the Audi's and BMW's from a spares and insurance cost Drog, Mercs are infinitely cheaper in both respects, the only plus I could see in a BMW would be if you got your hands on a good diesel model for economy. That beast of mine returned around 45 to 48 MPG at 80 MPH on the motorways and around 25 to 30 MPG on urban driving

I paused for breath between "Avensis" and "but".:p
I only do less than 3,000 a year. I bought my Avensis new in 2009 and it hasn't reached 23,000 miles yet. Where can I get a Merc. like the one you had yoda?

Firs was an 1984 VW Polo that got broken into at college on a regular basis. Now i have an Accord Tourer with the 2.4. Love them, had them since Honda introduced the car and has zero issues, current one is on 121k and feels great. Do the maintenance myself, get a good discount from a trusty Honda dealer I know. Just ordered a new A3 for her indoors, wasn't my choice but keeps her happy. With the spec we've gone for looking at a mid-July delivery.

Bought and sold loads of cars, I'm 38 and not far off having owned more cars than years I've been going. Best has been the current Accord. Soft spot for an Alfa 156 I had but talk about poor build and the twin spark engine used nearly as much oil as petrol. Most fun was a 3 series coupe I had. Worst has been a new A-Class I had to suffer as a company car (so doesn't really count), utter rubbish. Terrible to drive, squeaks, rattles, poor paint, cheap interior, awful car.

First car Triumph Herald convertible in 1979, had eons of cars over the years, Mini, Xr2, XR3, Sierra, Triumph GT6 (shit off a shovel), Fiesta, Corsa, Freelander, BMW 320 Tourer, Mazda MX5, millions I can't remember. Two years max and I get itchy feet and want a change. Current car Mazda 3 Series Sport. Lease now rather than buy and just hand the keys back after two or three years. Just put an order in for a Range Rover Evoque, 2ltr, 180 bhp, leather interior, 20" alloys, looking forward to driving it.

Evoke eh? I believe once you have driven a 'higher up' car you won't ever want to go back to a normal saloon.

Quite probably Drog. The MX5 was an absolutely superb car and was so low, it felt like you were an inch above the tarmac. Nowt ever went wrong with it and was my all time favourite. The Evoque will be like chalk and cheese and will be the 'poshest' car we've ever had. Really looking forward to driving it.

Inspired by the Lotus elan, older bro had lots of them, didn't like me calling them hairdressers cars lol
Out of all the sports cars I have owned, overall the Sunbeam Alpine was my favourite, beat an MGB hands down and 30 seconds to put up and take down the rag roof, the MGB was a joke from that point of view.
I always fancied a Honda S2000, apparently Honda have never had a VTEC engine failure, my experience with the Honda S800 coupe was great as well but the Alpine just edges it.

Just ordered my next new car today.
Made me wonder how many people still go to a dealer and pay the list price, or very close.

After trying to get a decent discount from the local dealer I gave it up and bought via an online broker for over five grand less. Same spec, brand new.
That's now the fourth time I've bought a new car in this way.
The dealer had second hand cars of the same spec that were more expensive than the new one I ordered.
