Just out of interest Robin, how often do you get to see "big" artists over there?
We get spoiled in the UK by the majority of bands visiting on tours.
Fairly often I would say. One thing I’ve noticed since moving from Sweden to Finland is that from time to time some small/medium sized bands skip Finland and I assume it’s because of the logistics. If you come up from Germany and get into Denmark you can get to both Norway and Sweden quite easily with bus but to get over to Finland you have to take the boat if you don’t want to take the long road around the Gulf of Bothnia.
One more thing that migh make an impact is that Finland has a small population and most bands just stop in Helsinki while in Sweden for instance you have at least 2-3 big cities that you can stop by on a Nordic tour.

Alright, how about this from 1957 Newport Jazz festival.
Just love this voice (Jimmy Rushing). Count Basie's orchestra backing:

I'm growing into Jazz dave. More and more when we have / had a dinner party I play Jazz as random background music. It's a bit like Olives and Brussels etc that one can't stand as kids but grow on a person with age.

Following on from SLKS
Some thoughts on dinner music.

some cool Jazz from the 50s
Chet Baker "The Pacific Jazz years" This is cool, soooo cooool, not loud, just coooool, smooth. Play it at a level that doesn't intrude on conversation.

Next is my favourite Jazz singer, Kurt Elling'
Again played quietly not to interrupt conversation, but loud enough for someone to say "Who is this?"
Try "Nightmoves" or "Flirting with Twilight".
I like to think that Elling is a mans jazz singer, as opposed to Michael Buble who, to me, is a woman's jazz singer.

I remember seeing Buble in Sydney and a woman infront was quite taken by him, posting on her phone that "she'd like to have his babies"! Yep, I looked over her shoulder.
He was good that night, I must admit.

An after thought, you could try Bill Frissell, he's a guitarist of note.
Plays beatles stuff and the like. Sort of modern country/jazz style, but beware some of his stuff is (to my mind) not worth it.

Here's a taste:

I'll throw another one into the mix, Drog;

Blossom Dearie (great name, but it's her real name), pianist and Jazz singer.
I'll let you dig out the youtubes of her.

In recent years it’s become obvious that we aren’t liked in the European community due to our alliance with the US and activities in the Middle East. After brexit I knew that this dislike would be worse and no one would vote for us. I don’t really care and only saw about twenty minutes of the programme and I thought all the acts I saw were rubbish anyway.

Who cares? I haven't watched it through since I was about 10. Bores me rigid, but worst of all it is intensely political, No idea why it gets so messy but it does cos it hardly matters on the world political stage does it?

Anyway moving on, we had some friends around last night for dinner and as usual I never know what to put on as background music which doesn't impinge on conversation. Anyway after sitting outside the local last week in the sun with a pint in front of me I got the inspiration I needed. Deep House (instrumental). It's the type of genre that you hear on your sunbed from some mediterranean beach bar but it worked excellently. Try this chaps, but put it through a decent speaker of course .........
