I'd suggest that today we were given the answer to why does TM keep pairing Evans with Smallwood in midfield. Offensively they do offer little but they do protect the defence. However this helps when all around them are 'at their game' today that was not the case. Palmer and Dack up top just did not work. Bennett and Nyambe on the right were frequently 'holding hands' rather than marking their men with Nyambe after the last couple of appearances relegating himself to the role of impact sub in my mind. On the left Williams was surprisingly paired with Armstrong rather than Bell. Particularly perplexing given the attacking partnership which has developed between the latter two. In between the two full back 'fails' Lenihan and Mulgrew looked like they had never played together whilst nothing came off for Reed despite him seemingly covering every inch of the pitch.
Poor fare and a dreadful showing. Preston's last two goals being so horrendously bad that they were almost comical. If they had been against any other team I'd have been rolling around laughing!
In between we had very little luck I have to say, Dack was denied by Rudds trailing leg after the GK had dived the wrong way, Lenihan heading wide from a great position when he should have scored with relative ease, a Mulgrew special was tipped over and Brereton had one chalked off for offside. Preston had 5 shots on target and scored 4 times and actually one fewer on target than the Rovers! However that's rather an irrelevant stat as we all know it's goals that count.
Overall the Manager and his team had absolute stinker and completely lost out to PNE in every department.

Raya... 5

Nyambe ... 3 Back to the push and run headless chicken that we all know so well and virtually handed PNE their second on a plate.

Lenihan.. 4 Bad day at the office.

Mulgrew.. 4 Is this the result of being given a brand new contract? A good player for us without a doubt but I'm not 100% sure that he's a good captain. Is he able to pick up and motivate a stuttering team to get the best out of them when they need to be? I'm not sure but that decision has to be TM's.

Williams... 3 Poor game. I've said recently on here that his best position is CH and today he proved it. The way PNE's winger skinned him for their 3rd goal was embarrssing.

Smallwood...4 (3 really but an extra 1 for effort)

Reed.... 4 (see Smallwood above)

Bennett..5 Did some good things and any number of bad things.

Armstrong.. 4 Without Bell and Graham around him was largely anonymous.

Palmer...3 Poor whether up top or on the right. I've a feeling his best position is being taken by Dack.

Dack... 4 Bad game by his standards but that was prob down to Graham getting splinters in his arse for the 1st 45 mins.

Subs..
Graham ...6 Came off the bench to score and generally gave Prestons defence something to think about.

Brereton.. 5 Finished his chance well but was given off side. For the rest of the match his 1st touch was poor and he was largely ineffective.

Rothwell... 5 I'd looked on his introduction as our best chance to get back in the match. Unfortunately he had little effect and didn't appear to be at the races either.

Tony Mowbray... 3. Not often that he comes in for criticism but today he got virtually everything wrong. Putting today's perplexing team selection aside my biggest gripe this season is the question of motivation. When we are considered underdogs and up against the likes of WBA, Leeds etc the players motivate themselves but against the perceived lesser threats of the Championship we rarely seem 'up for it' from the off. The last two matches being the case in point. I'm quite confident that we have better players than Rotherhamd and PNE yet we are left with 1 point out of a possible 6, with 2 goals for and 6 against! We need to still be smarting and humiliated Wed at Wigan when the team has an early chance to get back on track. I expect significant changes.

Referee Andy Madley... 6 We had this chap at Ewood v Forest and I commented how much he let go in that match. Much the same today. He let loads go that others would have blown for. I prefer this to the whistle happy type but he did allow PNE to subject Dack to some special 'treatment' without taking action. Allowed PNE players to waste time and feign injury from going 2-0 up without taking action to prevent it.

Bad days happen even with the best of teams. Best to put this one behind us. Let’s watch how the team responds next match. They have to know they’ve royally screwed up and I anticipate any team with any pride will come out guns blazing next week.

Mowbray needs to look in a mirror and ask himself why he made that team selection. Bizarre, and not for the 1st time.

Also what is wrong with Dack. His performances for the last 6 or so games have been poor. Has his head been turned or has he challenges with his private life?

calmed down a tad now, however depression is hold at the moment. My phone aint stopped .
Right TM got it wrong big time today with his weird selection of no frigging striker. He said DG had not trained all break and only did so on Thursday, if this is the case why not give the kid a go and say here ya go.
The midfield genuinely missed evans and it was clogged with players who didn't have a scobby what or where they was playing, with no regard of protecting the defence. No one played up front early doors and the defence largly stemming from midfield was all over the shop.Genunly I have no idea how palmer is a Chelsea player because hes either shite or doesn't give a shit about being on loan.
Dack was awful in his wrong position but did a hell of a lot of off ball running trying to make something happen.
Ive not seen a replay of the offside goal but it didn't look offside to me .The dickhead of ref gave everything to nobbers and let them timewaste and get away with numerous dirty fouls and no yellow. Mulgrew produced an amazing tackle which was given a s throw in by the ref but booked him for it.

Looked offside to me on the telly. I was the only one who saw it mind as most were jumping in the air when I said it. Seemed to take the ref long enough to spot the lino's flag too.

Mulgrew made the tackle but didn't get booked. It was Smallwood who got the yellow card presumably for saying something to the ref about his decision.

I've noticed that Dack is being virtually man marked by some teams and subject to some rough treatment to boot. They see him as the main link between defence and attack and set out to stop him.

Managers comments from the BBC match report

Preston manager Alex Neil:

"It was a good performance. We started well, got a 2-0 lead, created some great chances and finished our chances.
"We were aggressive, wanted to win, and fully deserved it. The reaction to conceding, to come back and finish the game off was probably the most pleasing aspect.
"At the end of the day we won against our local rivals, the lads played well, and I am pleased."

Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray:
"Much of our defending was uncharacteristic. There were also some individual errors. Collectively, we played too deep and invited trouble.
"Then at 3-1 we have a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside against Bradley Dack, who is clearly onside and that is frustrating.
"But let's not look too deeply at this. We lost 4-1 to a rival and we know we have to be better than this in the upcoming games. It is as simple as that."

Both about right imo.

should hold his hand up and say he ballsed it up. No only with selection but that team was not fired up and not up for it.

I'm really sorry but I keep hearing about dack being man marked and not able to play........ Messy, Renaldo, shearer even Rhodes found away of getting away from the men marking them! Granted the first two are world class but if he was any good he would find away. Just saying

6 for the ref? We had a poor 20 minutes but that whale omelette had a poor 98.
I felt nothing but sympathy about pne but from now on I hope they and their rotton followers fall through the leagues and get a shoeing off Darwen, Colne, Ossy St Mary’s and the Merry England.
That pillock to the right trying to goad us, goodness me the effing dwarf and Robinson? If I see him out, I’ll tackle the prick in the street and see if he hobbled off as slow as he did today.
Rant over. C’mon Roverrrrs

Report from a friend of mine who is a paramedic working in Preston yesterday " at one point it was like a war zone with fans from both clubs on one side of the street each launching classes and bottles through the air at each other " this was at 13.45 pm WTF
