The word must be doing the rounds of the Championship now. Blackburn Rovers are a bunch of pansies and an easy push over for any team willing to put the boot in, go muck or nettles and generally set out to rough em up. Try to play us at football and we have a good chance of taking the points, leave a foot or an elbow in, a few verbals and a large dose of aggression and we cave in. Proof? Just ask the supporters of Burnley, Wigan, Preston, Sheffield Utd, Luton etc and for more proof question those of the likes of Swansea and Norwich (who incidentally paggered PNE 0-4 at Deepdale today).
The Championship is a fantastic division full of upsets and as I’ve constantly pointed out any club not playing well can get easily get beaten, however no club hoping to be in the top six at the end of the season would dream of losing 13 matches over the course of a season let alone 13 losses by the second week of January and a goal difference of minus 4! It’s not a new issue either as this weakness has been bedevilling us since the good old days of Hughes and Allardyce. I long for a return to ‘Blackeye Rovers’. This wholly inaccurate and defamatory tag originated from the offices of Messrs Benitez, Wenger and Mourhino in the knowledge that they would surely influence the Referees was expanded upon by the press and media. Btw one Manager stood out as stating to the press and media that Blackburn were a good team that simply played hard but fair was actually Alex Ferguson! He was bang on too, hard but fair was the way with no play acting and trying to get opponents booked. What they might have lacked in quality they made up for in aggression and spirit and few clubs looked forward to a fixture against the Rovers.
Today even the aggressive presence of Trav was missing. Sure he hasn’t been himself of late and appears to me to have lost a yard of pace and a little snap in the tackle but he might just have been the best antidote to one of Blackburn’s own. Ollie Rathbone whose Dad most will remember played for the Rovers for a number of years and Mum Julie from Pleckgate. Rathbone competed, scrapped and if necessary fouled for every ball. He wanted to win in a manner we all wish our lot would do. He was booked in the 73rd minute for blatantly hacking down Markanday and how he even got that far without entering Referee Whitehouse’s book is a mystery. As an aside his goal was a cracker for which he certainly earned my admiration.
Only Bradley Dack can have deserved any praise from the Rovers fans who loudly booed their team off the pitch at full time, btw I’ll also add a cursory nod toward Jack Vale for a decent 60 minutes. Dack was all over the pitch creating chances for others from all sides for 60 minutes until he tired whilst the rest of the 11 were just awful, and ‘embarrassing’ as described by JDT after the match.
Kaminsky… 5 Could do nothing about the first two Rotherham goals but the killer third was all his own work. First he should have shouted to claim a long hopeful cross which was easily within his range, instead he stood and watched as Hyam headed the ball for a corner and then palmed a routine in swinging corner into his own net.
Rankin Costello.. 5 Generally out of sorts throughout the match.
Ayala… 6 Nowhere near his best but still probably the pick of the back four.
Hyam… 5 A poor showing today. His weak half clearance on 31 seconds actually proved the perfect assist to set up Odoffin to thrash home the opening goal. Unfortunately picked up an injury on 54 mins and had to limp off and be replaced by Phillips. I’ve noticed in the past that Hyam does clear the ball to dangerous areas rather than go safety first and try to bang the ball out of the ground.
Pickering… 5 Equally responsible for our nightmare start. A stupid attempted cross field pass intended for Hedges on the far touchline was easily intercepted by on the half way line and 5 seconds later was nestling in the back of our net after a wonder strike by Odoffin.
Morton… 5 A few nice touches in midfield but that is nowhere near enough contribution for a lad tipped to emulate Harvey Elliot by making it to Liverpool’s first team squad. Is it time to do the unthinkable and rest the Liverpool loanee perhaps?
Garrett… 6 Did enter the fray and was willing on occasion to mix it with Rotherham’s tough guy midfield and took a few hard knocks in the process but he is still only a young lad breaking into the first team and finding his way into the game.
Hedges… 4 A disappointing showing from Hedges and a poor miss. Generally well marshalled by the Rotherham defence.
Dack… 7 Did everything possible to open up Rotherham’s defence and succeeded at times only to be let down by godawful touches, control and finishing by his teammates. I would like to have given Bradley an 8 but for being guilty of missing one of the games easiest chances. This imo was Dack’s best showing since the first awful cruciate injury suffered against Wigan three years ago. Let’s hope his knees hold up as his fitness and confidence returns.
Vale… 6 Continues to show that he is a decent forward player if not the out and out striker that many of us hoped that he would be. He is mobile, skillfull and possess a creative brain, I’m sure he will be of value if only we could find a consistent and deadly finisher to share the load up top.
Gallagher…. 3 To quote Tommason……. EMBARRASING! To quote the Iron Lady in my signature … ‘Feeble’! Should have scored from a wonderful pass from Dack that left him clear for a strike on goal only for him to completely validate the old football put down….. his second touch is a tackle! That should have been 1-1 with the rovers pretty much well on top at that time. Who knows how the match would have panned out if he’d done his job properly.
Substitutes
Phillips ..6 (Hyam 56) Did OK when he came on and is continuing to mature and appears to be growing in confidence with cameos from the bench without being ‘overplayed’.
Markanday… 6 (Gallagher 54) Did his best to inject some creativity into the game but tbh the game was virtually up when he came on.
Dolan …6 (Hedges 54) Ditto Markanday above. Both brought energy and improvement on the men they replaced Messrs Hedges and Gallagher.
JDT… 3 Sent out a team ill prepared and ill equipped for what was always going to be a physical battle against a team deep in relegation trouble. The likes of Wigan, Rotherham, Luton, PNE etc are not cultured continental passing teams who will stand off and let you play out are they? They are more like a wolf pack. It’s time JDT learned how to prepare his team for the physical challenges of this league. Even more pressing it’s time he instructed his gk and defenders when to play out of defence and when to either bang the ball toward the opponents corner flag or when the occasion demands…. Row bloody Z! Playing across the back is fine when players are in plenty of space, but playing in 10 yard triangles around and even inside the penalty area is foolhardy and error prone. Similarly small triangles are pretty around the opponents penalty area but they don’t yield many goals. Speed deceives Jon…. Speed deceives! The second half of the season could prove very difficult as more teams catch on to exploit our soft centre.
Referee Dean Whitestone … 6 Let a lot go that other Refs would have punished unfortunately to our young team’s detriment. They’ll simply have to learn how to deal with it though. Saying that I’d rather have a Ref like him than a constant picky whistle blower who spoils the entertainment for the fans and thinks the crowd have paid their hard earned to watch a game being ruined.
