Prediction Champion 2019 & 2020
One of the first memories I have of playing PNE was my brother coming home after watching the famous 5-3 victory at Deepdale in 1960 something . From memory Barrie Hole was one of the stars that day and the song went “ He’s running down the middle, he’s running down the wing and when he scores the Darwen End will sing ‘ Barrie Hollllllllle “ Rovers fans composed and sang original songs in those days and not just the greatest hits of other clubs . Since then and after seven years of my young life at the Catholic College , Preston , making three appearances in school boy cup finals on Deepdale’s hallowed turf before they dug it up and put some plastic carpet down , this is a derby full of passion and a must win game for me .
In one of those finals I had the great privilege of being presented with the Cup and my winner’s medal by the one and only Sir Tom Finney - probably the greatest ever footballer to hail from the traditional textile towns of Lancashire and to be fair there have been a few - Douglas , Lofthouse , Matthews and McIlroy for starters .
With all the footballing history attached to Blackpool , PNE , Bolton , Preston and that lot down the M65 , I’ve got to say I simply can’t understand the attitude of some Rovers fans who just see it as another game . For me it’s not far off the cotton mill derby ( aka T’Classico ) and just in front of Bolton . Maybe some have been spoilt by our lengthy flirtation with the Premier League and the ‘ big ‘ clubs .
PNE have won little or next to nothing since the 19th Century ended and in comparison with the Rovers , the must successful and major trophy laden town club in England , if not the world , PNE’s trophy cabinet , if not history , pales into insignificance.
Like the Rovers I feel the location of their ground , well outside the city centre , doesn’t help their supporter numbers and despite having their best season for sometime , this is evidenced by their average crowds this season , which have barely reached 13,000 , not very good for a city club . Today they got less than 8,000 for an FA Cup tie against Premier League opponents.
Having said all that I’m sure they’ll have an excellent following at Ewood next Saturday for a game that both teams are approaching on the back of a dire set of results .
It’s time we beat them so I’m expecting TM to have the Famous Blue and White Halves wound up and raring to go , not misfiring like today , but firing on all cylinders
