I bet he's in back in southern Spain. Wasn't he suspended for 3 matches before getting this injury? Be interesting to see if he's picked up a fresh tan when he gets back.
Can't blame him really. Must get depressing being in a place where it's dark all day.

A friend sent me a photo of a sunny beach in that neck of the woods earlier today.
Give me some of that t-shirt weather.
Northern British winter has another 5 months to go yet. 😭

The first-half was another of domination without the scoreline reflecting it. In fact, we were lucky to not go in behind at the break after Rathbone's shot off the bar. Half-time feelings of being sick of playing well and not being rewarded for it, especially with the irony that Rotherham could have had a few goals themselves so easily from being "dominated". This is the Championship. Do any of our staff know that the league doesn't work by playing Football Manager football with players that can't necessarily capitalise on it? My only hope is that @Old Darwen Blue, top of the prediction league, predicted a 3-1 win to Rovers, which is still on. But Rotherham have had a couple of good results, lately, so they're no mugs.

Second-half got off to a bang, but we didn't go on to take advantage. We're a team out of confidence. Hugill comes on and I'd seriously consider putting Travis on, maybe for Sigurdsson, to add some grit to midfield. Rotherham were sure to go route one... Their aerial ability works another equaliser.

Wahlstedt
No strength against attacking players on the corner, and was nowhere for their equaliser. Aerially hopeless against Rotherham's set-piece threat because he is weak in stature, and they capitalised on it. He may be learning, but I wish we had his Swedish counterpart in goal for us instead. When is Pears back?!

Brittain
Good start to the game by getting forward and not putting a foot wrong. Had a rasping low drive saved by Johnasson, shortly followed by a lovely one two and cross into the box that somebody should have gobbled up but it was a bit pacey. Overall, a much better showing than in recent weeks, which I'm delighted about because we need that from somebody with no competition for the position.

Hill
Some good long passing. Bludgeoned his way through Rotherham to get a great pass through to Szmodics for our second. You've got to take a risk to get a reward, and he did just that. Didn't take care of Eaves for Rotherham's equaliser.

Carter
Solid. Shielded the big Tom Eaves off the ball beautifully in the first half. Did well from a scramble in the box from a Rotherham corner to prevent an equaliser. Think he needs to show more of a presence defending set-pieces. Was lucky Rathbone's shot off the crossbar bounced off him and away from danger.

Pickering
Got forward smartly early on. Good save by Johansson from a shot outside the box. Pickering's good performances have gone under the radar during our poor run.

Tronstad
Kept it simple as usual. He shows real intelligence to wait and see what other players do before making his decisions. Classy defensive midfielder and has been a great signing for us so far. Even managed a clearance off the line after Wahlsted was fouled in the second-half.

A Wharton
Not really in the game in the first half. Made a few loose attacking passes out of character. Grew into the game in the second-half, which shows to me he is fully fit now rather than tiring as the game wares on. He went on to make some nicer passes which we all know and love. Showing much better strength and defensive work these days.

Moran
Somewhat quiet in the first half but a lovely bit of skill towards the end of it to win a free-kick in a dangerous position. Embarassing behaviour in the second half after he made a poor pass and he went to ground twice like he'd been shot. Rovers supporters will accept mistakes if you show you're trying to make up for them. Correct to be substituted as I think his poor form is continuing.

Szmodics
Didn't look offside at first glance for his chalked-off goal. Some loose passes throughout the game. Good run and composure to finish for our second goal. Never stops fighting, which is why he is Mr. Blackburn Rovers at the minute.

Sigurdsson
Good determination for the goal. Could have had a second goal but for some brave blocking.

Telalovic
Could have had a goal after Sigurdsson's blocked shot. Nice touches and control on the ball. Got the ball caught under his feet a bit early in the second-half when Wharton passed to him in a great position, but ended with a weak shot on his weaker foot. A bit gutted he was subsituted fairly early because he cause problems for Rotherham's defence.

As for the subs...

Markanday
Ineffective. Out of match-practice.

Ennis
Got a little bit of a bollocking by Tomasson shortly after he came on for not closing down up front. Showed some good hold up play when given the chance. Looking a bit sharper but still not there in my view.

Some other thoughts...

Ryan Hedges was on commentary on Rovers TV. He made an interesting comment about Rotherham's set-piece threat that the best defence is to not give those away in the first place. Suggests to me that we don't really bother working on defending them, which was evident. Later, the commentators said how dangerous Rotherham are at set-pieces, but it's more how poor we are and how there is no appetite at the club for a physical Blackburn Rovers.

Another thing Hedges was happy about later on was "another shot on target". Rovers are all about statistics and, arguably, Big Sam's "percentages". Anybody, including myself, that occasionally clamour for a more opportunistic/canny/ugly way of playing in this league, aren't going to get it under Tomasson.

Rotherham United were time-wasting from almost the first minute. Morrison took his own sweet time to take his long throws. Must be some psychological thing they try.

I know Rotherham are goal-leakers, but what I wouldn't give for a defender like Morrison.

Rotherham nearly scored on the counter after the Premier League referee got in the way of Tronstad in the middle of the parl. Eaves, as problematic as he was with his physicality, scuffed it over the bar when it was harder to miss than score.

Disappointing to not win this one. A lost opportunity for three points.

Great post Goose. Summed up perfectly my own thoughts, glad someone else mentioned Hedges comments as I thought exactly the same.

Totally agree with Morrison, he was MOTM easily.

THIS!

We should have been up by more than 1 before they first equalised.
But Rotherham did hit the bar and also missed 2 close range sitters in the 2nd half.

Eaves over the bar from a few yards, then whoever has that free header wide late on.

So probably a fair result.

Which shows where we are. Mid table and slipping, though with a big enough cushion to be able to stave off the threat of relegation (that will probably be on the cards in 2024-25).

Still only 9 points off the play-offs though. 🤪 This journey is awesome.
