Apologies to the rugby fans for being a grouch - each to their own! - but ten scorelines from the group stages in Japan: 35-0, 61-0, 49-3, 71-9, 66-7, 63-0 57-3, 48-7, 45-7 and 45-10 hardly endorse the marketing tag 'World Cup'. Maybe it should be re-named the Seven Nations?

Watched NZ v British Lions this morning. NZ won quite comfortably 23-8 despite a big effort by the Brits (well Yorkshire and Lancashire is prob more accurate). An unbelievable, non stop display of strength, pace and most of all stamina and fitness. This is Rugby for supremely powerful and speedy athletes with not a knock kneed tub of lard in sight. Unlike union which has a position for all the fat lads in the school classroom wouldn't get a sniff at this version.
How they kept that up for 80 mins is unbelievable. The age old image of a pack of steaming fat blokes standing around with their hands on their hips desperately struggling to get their puff back whilst a scrum is organised and then organised again when some fatty still out of puff collapses it simply isn't in evidence in this version.

I know it's Australia, and we are a limited market, but people appear to be finding other things to entertain themselves.
An interesting point about taking a lesser amount of money to grow the sport by having it on free to air tv.
At the moment Union in Aus is dying a slow death.
Will this creep around the world?

I might be accused of being a dinosaur don't I subscribe to Sky or BT on principle. Never have either. All my life the TV Licence has been a political tool. Put it up a couple of quid and every opposition parties line up to attack whichever govt is in power on behalf of the unemployed an pensioners who cannot afford to pay more. Despite most of those poor disadvantaged sorts having sky dishes stuck to their house walls and the incumbents paying more per month than the TV Licence costs for a year!
If sport goes off terrestrial TV I simply don't watch. Golf, Snooker, Boxing and cricket all mean far less to me these days. It's odd how things diminish in importance if one can manage without them. Quite the opposite of the old adage 'Absence makes the heart grow fonder'.

Free to air tv is what you get. The ABC (like the BBC) is funded directly by government. Commercial TV by advertising revenue

True. France have been brilliant so far. A lot of people will give Shaun Edwards a lot of credit for that. Think he would deserve it. Although i cannot stand him. So arrogant. Although i will say here, In Rugby League i support Leigh.
