Well I think most of the major points have been covered in the last couple of days, but here is my twopence worth.
I had a bad feeling going in to this game and I have to say it was completely justified. Southend had a decent season 16/17 and Phil Brown has slowly but surely done a very good job there. He appears to have done some good business over the summer and having watched them on Saturday I would tip them to have a strong season this time around.
They were organised, sharp, good on the ball and work incredibly hard for each other. They were by far the better footballing team both technically and physically. Marc Antoine Fortune (remember him) gave our defence the run around and Kightly was the best player on the pitch in terms of technical ability. Nyambe battled (showing some pride) with him but was outclassed really.
The two centre halves (I recognised Ferdinand) were comfortable all game against Graham. I could not believe just how many times we tried to lump it up to him - I have to day, despite being our best player, Mulgrew was most guilty of this, perhaps because he had zero options in the midfield (the game bypassed Whittingham and Smallwood).
The game became as tiresome as that infamous 2nd leg vs Millwall in the FA Cup when it was Shittu vs Rhodes in an aerial battle.
For all of Mowbray's blabbering about playing football the right way, pressing high, dominating possession etc etc, there was little evidence of any of this..... Dack rarely got a kick and strangely didn't appear to be interested in trying to get hold of the ball and turn in dangerous areas - a No.10 should really be looking to find space to receive the ball mid-way in the opposition half and start attacks, but I can't remember a single occasion when he did that. He missed an absolute bloody sitter in the first half as well!
I said to my dad after an hour, it simply looks like Southend had two extra players on the pitch. For reference, they played a 4-4-2 and still overwhelmed us in the centre of the park.
Samuel was in my opinion the worst player on the pitch. I hope that I have completely misjudged this lad, but his body language looked all wrong on Saturday. He looks like a young man with a chip on his shoulder, but worse than that, he doesn't appear to have the technical ability to even remotely get away with that attitude. He kind of gave me an impression of a school boy who's been watching Mario Balotelli and thinks it's cool to copy his on-pitch behaviour. That kind of sulky I don't give a shit attitude.
There's a hell of a long way to go in this season, and in many ways this may have been the best possible thing to happen. Sometimes you can start a season with a few lucky wins and it papers over the cracks; cracks which inevitably appear over the course of a season. There's nowhere to hide with this one - it was abysmal. We must improve ASAP otherwise we could be going in to September with very few points on the board.
Next Saturday feels like a huge game already. We need a strong, committed, dominant performance against Doncaster to settle the fans and kick-start the season. Lose that one and we could be going to Bradford devoid of confidence and with a fan base baying for blood.
Raya - 5 - Perhaps he could have done a little bit better with the initial save for the second goal, but that may be very harsh. Kicking was embarassing at times - Final few minutes, trying to apply pressure he hooked one (not for the first time) straight out of play.
Nyambe - 4 - Had his work cut out from the get go and Kightly is a cut above this league. Looked like he got sucked in to the centre of the box for the first goal and I THINK it was his man that was completely unmarked to score.
Lenihan - 4 - Distribution was crap.
Mulgrew - 6 - He's the best player in our team. Comfortable on the ball and scored a glorious free kick. As guilty as anyone for that long ball to Graham.
Williams - 4 - League One full back all day long. Ponderous and slow of thought. He's a willing runner but so often he slows an attack down - their right winger had his measure all day long.
Smallwood - 4 - You can see the lad has been brought in to be a destroyer next to Whittingham but funnily enough he doesn't appear to see the game quick enough. Much of the game bypassed him.
Whittingham - 4 - Had a decent 10mins after the break before he disappeared again. I can't remember either him or Smallwood ever influencing the game apart from some 5 - 10 yard passes to either full back. Brought in to pull the strings in midfield - he need to buck up.
Dominic Samuel - 3 - Not sure what this lad is all about. How much was he again? Reluctant to make an early judgement but looks like an attitude problem - Both Stam and Adkins questioned his attitude and it took me 25mins to work out why. Looks like he has a very high opinion of himself.
Dack -4 - Struggled to assert himself - one or two little flashes but you're looking for a No.10 to initiate attacks and get his foot on the ball. Didn't happen anywhere near enough. Missed an absolute sitter which would have made it 1 - 1.
Bennett -4 - Extremely quiet but for that shot in the first half. Was kept on and went central once Dack was hooked, but that didn't last long before young Chapman replaced him.
Graham - 4 - Complete lack of service to him for the entire game. However, when you're playing crap and struggling to get a foothold in a game, you need your striker to make the ball stick and let your midfielders turn around, face the opposition goal and let them get up with you. That didn't happen once. A player of his experience should have given the centre halves a lot more to think about.
Subs
Feeney - Rubbish
Evans - Probably saw more the of ball than Smallwood and Whittingham put together, but was running down blind alleys and had a lack of support from his team mates.
Chapman - Buzzed around with real 'debut' enthusiasm but was very haphazard on the ball.
Mowbray - Can only assume he was very, very flat heading home on Saturday. This is now HIS team after a full pre-season and none of his signings impressed or in fact turned up. Lots to think about and by the end of August he could be facing fan revolt, such is the expectation this season. Made all the right noises over summer and fell spectacularly at the first hurdle.
Ref - thought he had a good game. Nice to be reminded that football is a contact sport. He let a lot go and the game benefitted from it.
Southend - Keep an eye out for this lot, they impressed . Their front line and two wingers are a real handful. Their defence needs a test - we were woeful and could have scored 3 so that could be their downfall.
