Well I'm going to use a term to describe the Rovers today that I've only very rarely used in he past to describe them .... CLINICAL! What a refreshing change from the norm when I've reported so often on chances going begging in the past. The stats speak for themselves, 3 away goals from 4 shots on target after just 29% possession! I can't say I'm happy to see the Rovers on the back foot for so long but to be fair for all their possession the boys restricted Swansea to very few goal chances whilst at the other end they were merciless in their finishing. After 30 mins it was one way traffic and I feared we were going to let a goal in. I moaned in exasperation when Hedges spurned a chance to open the scoring when he won the ball with ex Rover and Swansea GK Andy Fisher way off his line, but Hedges strode forward, turned inside and set debut boy and newbie Szmodics up to confidently stroke the ball home on 39 mins. 0-1 against the run of play and on to HT.
Second half and more of the same before Hedges played a peach of a pass on 57 minutes to set BBD free on goal, Big Ben shouldered off Wood before moving forward with the ball on his now clinical right foot and dinking A delightful finish over the hapless Fisher. 0-2 and more than a little breathing space.
With the clock ticking ever slower I was thinking if Swansea score then 1-2 will take some defending when super sub Dolan teed up Travis to thunder a scorcher past Fisher and inside the near post with 6 minutes of normal time remaining. I've never had Trav down as clinical but after two 'worldies' in two games I'm having to change my opinion!
So 2 games into a new season and with the stats saying 6 points, 4 goals for and none against JDT has go of to a dream start. Some are now questioning Mowbray's record but tbf with the exception of Szmodics Mowbray signed and/or developed every man jack of today's team. I can't say that I am happy to watch a match from behind he sofa where we have less than 30% possession but the stats don't lie do they?
Kaminsky.... 7 Protected by his defenders most of the match but always in the right place to make a comfortable save when needed.
Brittain.... 7 A more assured game than last week and will hopefully continue to settle in at right back.
Ayala... 8 Dominating performance and a tower of strength in defence.
Wharton.... 7 Strong and resolute performance with a marvellous block to deny Swansea.
Pickering.... 6 No the pre injury Pickering as yet but linked well with Wharton and Edun to snuff out and Swansea threat from the right.
Travis.... 8 Worked his socks off in midfield in what must have been stifling heat but still found the energy to forge forward and overlap Dolan and thunder the 3rd and killer goal home in the 84th minute.
Buckley...7 Still adapting to a more defensive role alongside Trav but a solid performance apart from losing possession cheaply on a couple of occasions.
Gallagher.... 7 No shortage of effort all afternoon and contributed well when needed in defence too.
Hedges.... 8 Three assists in two matches! I'd hoped this lad would find his position and it appears that he has! A strong performance at the club where he started his career must have given him great satisfaction.
Szmodics.... 7 Showed his attacking instincts by managing to be first up alongside Hedges to receive the ball and stroke it home. Looked knackered in the second half when he was replaced by Edun on 58 minutes as JDT immediately sought to strengthen the defence once BBD had put us 2 up.
Brereton Diaz .... 7 A decent performance capped by a great finish for the second goal. His right foot has developed into a fair old weapon as his pace and strength has developed.
Subs
Edun.... (Szmodics 58) 7 A good performance contributing to the shutting down of Swansea's right side. Capped b a terrific goal line block.
Dolan... (Hedges 79) 7 Brought on to provide energy and invigorate our attack at a time when the heat of the day was sapping our attacking energy. Did his stuff to by setting up Trav for the coup de grace after being on the pitch for just 5 minutes.
Vale ... (Gallagher 79) 6 Didn't really figure in he final 10 mins.
Morton... (Buckley 89) N/A
JDT.... 7 Whilst I'd rather see us enjoying more possession no one can argue that the Manager put a foot wrong with his selection, tactics and substitutions.
Referee Steve Martin... 6 Leant slightly to the home side but otherwise got most things right.
