Wahlstedt
Made a good save in the first-half, and dealt with a few crosses in the second-half. A very quiet day for him, overall.

Brittain
Dealt with Hoever (the player who scored two against us in this fixture last season) very well. Got forward a few times but the ball never dropped for him.

Carter
Barely noticed him, other than a clearance or two in the second half. Picked up an injury that he managed to run off in the second-half.

S Wharton
Super header from the corner for our first goal and, somehow, it feels like the goal that won it for us after we stayed stubborn thereafter. Clashed heads with Gayle and his game was over after fifteen minutes or so. I think he'll be back soon.

Hill
Good. Puts in some good blocks, and seems to be able to head the ball (a weakness in our squad). Just needs to take care of the ball a bit more carefully as he gave it away in a dangerous position in the second-half, but that's being picky.

Pickering
Solid, but is easy to skin with an ounce of pace. I think he is learning to limit that weakness, however, with decent positioning.

Tronstad
The quiet and industrious worker is my Man of the Match. He kept Johnson in his pocket all game, and was everywhere to stop Stoke in their tracks. Key to us getting a clean sheet.

A Wharton
Some good passes that cut through the Stoke defence on a few occasions, and some equally poor decision-making that put us on the back foot and in danger. I think he is a bit jaded without an international break having played for the England Elite squad or whatever they call the U21s these days.

Moran
A very good game. He was great at doing his defensive duties, and played a couple of key passes through that could have led to goals. Deserved the goal towards the end.

Szmodics
Consistently good. He deserved a goal at the death for his persistence. He consistently chased the Stoke defence down and never let up. Perhaps should have had a hat-trick.

Dolan
Industrious, but not really his day. Some neat bits of play, but also some cheap give-aways.

As for the subs

Travis
Drove forward well, but is often not the one you want on the ball in those areas.

Telalovic
Not on the pitch long enough to notice anything. Think he's going to get into his stride soon, which could be crucial for us over the busy festive period.

Garrett
Lovely through-ball for Szmodic's goal. Seemed to play well when he came on. Could become competition for A Wharton in a game like this.

Sigurddson
Not on the pitch long enough to notice anything. Possibly a bit jaded from international duty, and has had to get up to speed for fitness since his arrival.

Leonard
Not on the pitch long enough to notice anything.

Overall, that was a great win against a good Stoke side, and to score three against a team that has kept four clean sheets in the last five games is a great effort.

Have to say this was one of those results that reflected the game (for once).

After those 2 one on one sitters missed in the first half I wondered if we would see the hanging on and conceding late type of stuff we have seen a zillion times before.

I'll slap these first-half notes here:
  • 2: Szmodics should have put us 1-up in the second minute after a great lofted through ball by Moran.
  • 4: Woeful defending by Stoke City on the corner for S Wharton's goal in the 4th minute. Great header though!
  • 6: Good save from Wahlstedt from Daniel Johnson after lackadaisical defending from Rovers (and Hill in particular)
  • 7: Lucky escape after more poor defending as McNally scuffles it over the bar. S Wharton took a nasty knock to the head from Gayle in the process to force a substitution with Travis on.
  • 10: Poor pass from Pickering puts Stoke on the attack, but the low cross comes to nothing.
  • 14: Travis played through down the flank but played a poor cross into the 'keeper's path when Szmodics was in a great position to score.
-15: Nearly caught on the counter
  • 16: Awful pass in the middle of the park from A Wharton puts Stoke City on the attack, but it ends with a shot a few yards wide.
  • 17: Szmodics played through with a lovely ball over the top and should have scored again. Put too much on his touch when trying to round the 'keeper.
  • 19: Good tracking back by Moran to foil a Stoke attack.
  • 20: Great opportunity as Dolan plays Szmodics through, but he doesn't have the pace to get past his man. Passes to Brittain who messes up and loses possession.
  • 23: Good block by Pickering in the box from Leris.
  • 26: Stoke looking dangerous again as they play into the box. A Wharton blocks the cross for a corner which comes to nothing.
  • 28: A good break from Rovers sees us overplay it and Stoke come away.
  • 29: Moran played in down the right but his cross is too close to the 'keeper.
  • 29: Great ball from Tronstad to Szmodics down the left but cross comes to nothing. Stoke counter dangerously but mess it up in the box.
  • 31: A Wharton loses the ball dangerously in midfield.
  • 33: Tronstad covers well to break up a Stoke attack in the box.
  • 34: Travis and Tronstad clash heads in the Rovers box. Both are OK.
  • 37: Stoke trying to patiently probe but Rovers keeping their shape.
  • 37: Wahlstedt advances outside his box to unconventionally punch away a dangerous ball over the top.
  • 39: Rovers doing well to keep Stoke contained as they pass back to the 'keeper.
  • 40: Tronstad thwarts Johnson yet again.
  • 41: Moran does defensive work well and Szmodics is played through to the side, but nothing is on. Ultimately comes to nothing.
  • 42: A Wharton loses the ball and Stoke come forward. Tronstad clears up and Dolan wins a free-kick.
  • 45: A messy build up play from Stoke leads to Johnson blazing way over the bar.
  • 45+1: Rovers play out stupidly from the back and just about get away with it.
  • 45+1: Yellow card for Dolan for kicking the ball away.
  • 45+2: Wahlstedt could have made a call to Hill to let a cross go out of play. Ultimately OK as Pickering won us a free-kick from the half-clearance.
  • 45+4: Great work by Travis to win and keep hold of the ball in the middle. Brittain is almost played in with a lofted through-ball but it's just got too much on it.
  • 45+4: Dolan steals the ball in the Stoke half. A Wharton makes a hash of it but Rovers come back with Szmodics almost wriggling through in the box before the 'keeper collects the loose ball.
  • 45+6: Leris gets the ball in the box but is crowded away from goal. His shot on the turn is well-wide.
  • 45+7: Stoke push forward but the Korean lad comically can't control the ball and it trickles out of play. Half-time.
What have you got against Adam Wharton? You seem to delight in pointing out any little error and never mention any of the brilliant passes putting us in great attacking positions. I had a good stream and he played well for me. He's a very good player.

This may seem sacrilegious but I know what goozeburger is saying. Adam Wharton gives the ball away far to cheaply. It’s not just today but regularly. I said this to they guy behind me today and he said Wharton is going all the way to the top. 30 mins later he had to agree,
Is he has good as Moran or Elliot?
He really needs to learn to love the ball and possession or he will go nowhere near the top,
Just take some time to watch some of the suicidal things he does with the ball and the trouble it causes
This does not mean I don’t think he’s a good player or I don’t appreciate his talent

Do you know how old Adam is? He is destined for the top!!

I pointed out a few times the good balls he played through in both halves. He is a great player for his age, but I'll point out anything of note. I take exception to you claiming that I delight in criticising him. That's just not true.

I agree with you. A Wharton is a brilliant player on occasions and the World is his oyster; however he does make some basic mistakes that well and truly drop us in it. He is only young and should get better. He needs some bloody good coaching however let’s give the lad time.

I think you're being a bit unfair Al, I've not seen a singling out of any player by Goozy or indeed anyone on here for undue criticism, it's mostly well balanced and thought out, unlike another site I could mention where everyone's great when we win and shit when we lose.

Criticism of a player is fair do's in my book except during the actual game, wait for the pub or the forums after, during the game every player should get 100% backing from the stands whether they're having a stormer or a nightmare. The only caveat being if someone isn't putting in the effort, but I think this is extremely rare, it's more a confidence thing when players look off the pace at times.

Wharton did OK today and make some constructive passes but he did give the ball away cheaply too often. He needs to up his defensive work and cut out the mistakes before he can be deemed Premier league quality.

Got to say that Ref Andrew Kitchen didn't cover himself in glory today. 4/10

It appears like it to me. You look for every fault and point it out. You don't do this for other players.

Adam Wharton was good and bad in equal measure yesterday .... imo. He has amazing passing ability, he see's a pass before anyone else and frequently before he even receives the ball! Unfortunately he has big faults which he and we must work hard on to eradicate if he is to achieve his full potential..... wherever that may be. 90mins of concentration being one
Take the example of Jordan Rhodes, a real finisher, a fox in the box but on the half way line when we are under the cosh and looking for an out ball and someone to hold the ball up he was worse than bloody useless. Rhodes was tortoise slow too which many accuse Wharton of being. I could never work out what was in Rhodes mind, being a consumate finisher is a God given ability and is in the head, the easy bit of harassing, and grafting for the team is in the heart and he couldn't ever improve on it. That is why he failed to play in the Premier League. If Wharton follows that path and believes that he is the finished article then he won't either.

I’ve never been happier to get my prediction wrong! Stuff promotion, we would get battered most weeks anyway like the inbred. I’m happy with watching our young team playing scintillating football in the championship. I think the fact that folk focus on Adam Wharton is because of his potential. As I’ve previously pointed out he does have an annoying habit of not concentrating and losing the ball. That’s obvious. I’ve yet to see any criticism of him however which wasn’t constructive, I don’t think anyone on here is saying anything about him that JDT the magician isn’t saying to him in private.
