Watching this match from the armchair comfort of the Directors box this match was men against boys. A mismatch rather than a match....... until we pressed the suicide button again, and again, and again and again!
With the regular centre half pairing rested and two right backs at full back and a relatively new midfielder in Harper, Rovers had easily enough in every department to win this cup tie at a canter. Comfortable in possession and alternating imperiously stroking the ball around the pitch with killer passes through Crewe's mesmerised defence saw us 3-0 up after 20 mins with the tie virtually done and dusted. In truth I was beginning to feel a little sorry for Crewe and their impressive travelling contingent. Carry on like this I thought and we could be reading about David Artell's sacking in the morning papers.
And then came the button pushing.
Button 1. First off Whartons suicidal pass to Harper on the edge of our box when he had two Crewe players in fairly close attendance was rather more than careless and resulted in Harper attempting to play himself out of trouble instead of hitting row Z . Maybe if it was 0-0 in the 85th minute he would have chosen the Row Z option. As it was it was a midfielders instinct rather than those of a defender saw him lose possession before trying to repair the damage with an ever so slight shove to down Porter who at the time was clean through with only Leutwiler to beat. It was a soft pen and a harsh red card but as the laws stand the Ref couldn't really be criticised. I must say a worse punishment for Harper than that given to Paul Pogba for a viscous and premeditated lunge at Hector Bellarin at Highbury the day before suggests that sometimes the law is indeed an ass. No problem with the penalty but minor shoves, the likes of which we see many times in any football match one cares to view are rather too harshly punished imo.
Button 2. Most Refs would have deemed that Elliot Bennett was fouled and awarded a free kick for the Rovers against the memorably named Perry Ng (I kid you not). David Webb is not most Refs. He allowed play on and instead of accepting it as just one of those things Bennett did a very commendable impersonation of David Beckham's back heel on Diego Simeone all those years ago. Stupid, unprofessional and unforgivable.
I trust Captain for the day Bennett (or should that read 'Captain for 56 minutes') will feel the full force of Mowbrays wrath and be fined as heavily as his contract will allow. Maybe someone might check but I've a feeling that the usual 3 match suspension might now be 4 due to it being his second sending off. Bennett on the right gives a balance and solidity to our now preferred 4-4-2 formation and to lose his services in what is an important time of the season just as we have real momentum in the far more important Division 1 promotion race could prove to be very damaging.
Buttons 3. What are we doing at corners? No one seemed to know who they were marking and no one jumped and made it their own.
Button 4. Just a few minutes later see button 3! No one even left the ground this time as stuck in the middle of a crowd of Rovers players Chris Porter actually stooped to head the ball home! Worse still he was well inside the 6 yard box which is traditionally territory 'owned' by the goalkeeper. Needs to be mentioned that ours was flat footed in a rather less than commanding pose on his own goal line.
Memo to Mowbray... Put some fecker on the post at corners!!! I realise this was difficult with only 9 men available but it's an old gripe of mine and a very strange omission in a team that is managed by such an old style centre half with long experience. Even shorn of bodies as we were I'm sure one man on the back stick is not too much to ask for. Just adherence to that simple instruction would have seen us stroll into today's draw on our own.
Leutwiler.. 5. Raya isn't the best in the air but he's in no danger of losing his place to this lad.
Nyambe.. 5. Looked to have found his natural level in this match. I've been banging on about how poor we are in both full back positions for long enough and I'm suddenly noticing more and more people mentioning the same thing of late.
Ward... 5 Ward is Ward. Disappeared at HT so he might have been injured. He'd already performed a disappearing trick for Crewe's first goal as he was nowhere in camera shot when Harper gave away possession. In his favour I do believe that he has lost some weight.
Wharton..5 Did some good defensive things but looked a little inexperienced and his distribution was very poor.
Caddis.. 5. Unremarkable match. Don't really know why we picked him up off Rowett and Zola's scrap heap but we did. I think Mowbray hoped to turn this lad's downward spiral of descent and lick him into shape. He hasn't and he looks like he's a stone overweight.
Bennett..4 Doing fine (would have been a 7) and playing a big part in our opening scintillating football before screwing up big time with that petulant back heel at Ng. All his experience counted for sweet FA! Obviously not Captain material is my final comment.
Evans..6 Looked stronger than of late and played some decent passes until Bennett went off.
Antonnson.. 6 Somehow unless he's scoring this lad is almost anonymous. Again on Sunday he did nothing remarkable in defence or attack.
Graham...7 Much better link play with Samuel. This pair appear to have developed a distinct partnership and work well together. Not only that but when one or the other scores they display a genuine 'warmth' between them in their celebrations. Sacrificed at HT to stiffen up the midfield and replaced with Smallwood.
Samuel... 8. I liked the look of this lad early in the season but he struggled to find the net back then. Currently he's turned that around albeit through imo the aforementioned partnership with DG. Played excellently before Harper was dismissed and strove manfully up front on his own when we were down to 9. (Caused me to wistfully rem Shearer's display in taking the entire LUFC defence on when Flowers had been sent for a very early bath. First 10/10 I believe ever awarded by the LT match report.)
Smallwood.. 6 Typical energetic display much needed in the circumstances.
Downing... 6 Obviously a better option than Ward and saved the day at 3-3 with a tremendous block.
Travis.... 5 Never seen this lad before but he came on and did oK after struggling initially with the pace of the match.
So lets hope it's a case of 'lessons learned' regarding the futility of cheap dismissals. Unfortunately we are dealing with footballers so I doubt that will ever happen.
