I agree wholeheartedly Al , Botham was a fantastic all rounder , bowling , batting & fielding . I don't remember Trueman & Statham in their pomp but Anderson &
Broad have been magnificent for a long time and I still think it's worth acknowledging when a bowler reaches a milestone
Gordon , I accept that cricket is different now . and the test bowlers don't put in the miles in county cricket like they used to , which helps today's test bowlers play more matches & have longer careers . You also have DRS and far better fielding which helps them amass more wickets .
However on the batsman's side, he has more protection . Helmets & body armour have taken a lot of the fear out of facing fast bowling . Teams also tend to bat a lot further down the order . 9 , 10 and 11 were usually complete rabbits in the " olden" days , but in most cases they tend to be able to hold a bat and know what to do with it these days . Oh and covered pitches help too , uncovered pitches were a nightmare for batsmen .
