looks like the pay dispute between Cricket Aus and the players is all but over, so normal service will resume soon.

Great news that Dave , I'm not sure how I'd have got through the winter months without the Ashes . Hopefully England now on the up , for what will be an enormous challenge to retain them .

First day of the final test of the SA series at Old Trafford this morning . When it's England's turn to field , Jimmy Anderson will take the new ball from the newly named James Anderson End . With 480 test wickets , Jimmy deserves this great tribute . The finest bowler in Lancashire's history , along with Brian Statham .

Well done England , good win at the home of cricket :) I never expected this after the debacle that was the 2nd test .

Let's beat the Windies 3-0 ( wife won't be happy ) & then go down under &. give it a good go ( apologies to the Blackpool gaffer ) against the Aussies .

I don't like cricket , I love it !!!

Yep onto my 7th pint of Sagres .

Historic day / night , pink ball test match ! Listening to TMS in Portugal by the pool . Good luck to both England & the Windies ( divided family loyalties )

70,000 tickets sold for the first 3 days . Test match cricket in rude health in England at least .

Possibly but that's cos all the best ones are playing basketball etc in the USA.

Is this the worst windies of all time?
It probably is , but I see this as payback for the 1970/80s when they made us look like the worst England team ever . I'll be happy with an innings win and a 3-0 whitewash .

I've a feeling they'll be back . Haven't they just won the U19s World Cup ?

Good job you're on here OOT cos I doubt you'd be allowed to say 'whitewash' over the road. You know what they are like. ;)

Anyway as far as I am concerned they were one of the best teams that I have ever seen. Great batsmen and obviously Richards was the pick of the bunch but they seemed to have a production line of world class bowlers who could destroy any team.

They were Gordon and their batting was almost as frightening as their bowlers . Holding , Roberts , Garner & Croft , followed by Marshall must have been the most fearsome combination of all time

I played for Enfield against Holding & Roberts when they played in the Lancs League for Rishton & Haslingden respectively . Quite a scary proposition although the wickets were relatively slow and I doubted they ever gave it 100%

Yes whitewash could be a word that gets me in to trouble , but the wife likes to remind me of the Windies " blackwash "
of England back in the day

I wonder what "they'd " have to say about that !

It's humour and banter and is quite acceptable. Just the thought police that rule against it and the weak willed who listen to them.

Charlie Griffith certainly gave it 100%

West indies 145 - 8.
I'm hoping that England bat first next week. I have a ticket for Saturday and it could be all over by then if Windies bat first.

Looking like a 3 day win , by an innings and a lot . Broad on a hat trick , Windies 104 - 7 .

Broad needs one more wicket to go past Beefy's 383 test wickets . Will England ever have another pair of opening bowlers like Jimmy & Broady ?

He's done it . 384 test wickets - congratulations Broady

We said that about Statham and Trueman. Others will emerge.

Can't be bothered looking it up but don't they play more test matches these days than they used to? Test match players rarely appear for their county's these days whereas Botham was a regular for Somerset. I doubt Broad will have anywhere near Botham's county matches under his belt...... and he'll never have played for Scunny Reserves either.:)

I think you are right Drog. Botham was a much better cricketer and there were not as many test matches in his day so his records were always going to be broken. It's the same with football. It's much easier to clock up the international caps than it used to be in say Billy Wright's day which is why the older footballers records get broken all the time.

I agree wholeheartedly Al , Botham was a fantastic all rounder , bowling , batting & fielding . I don't remember Trueman & Statham in their pomp but Anderson &
Broad have been magnificent for a long time and I still think it's worth acknowledging when a bowler reaches a milestone

Gordon , I accept that cricket is different now . and the test bowlers don't put in the miles in county cricket like they used to , which helps today's test bowlers play more matches & have longer careers . You also have DRS and far better fielding which helps them amass more wickets .

However on the batsman's side, he has more protection . Helmets & body armour have taken a lot of the fear out of facing fast bowling . Teams also tend to bat a lot further down the order . 9 , 10 and 11 were usually complete rabbits in the " olden" days , but in most cases they tend to be able to hold a bat and know what to do with it these days . Oh and covered pitches help too , uncovered pitches were a nightmare for batsmen .
