The authorities here can be very severe, I remember one keeper (can't remember his name) who once claimed a catch that wasn't.

You've got to realise that Cricket is the sport in Australia. Bigger than any of the football codes, followed Australia wide.
To make the national side is some achievement and these guys have blown it all away.

It never ceases to amaze me that sports people that do this, think they'll get away with it.
Anyway, the talk here is that Smith is gone.
I'd bet that he won't play for Australia again. What he did has cost him millions of dollars in pay and sponsorships. It will also cost CA a fortune in TV rights. (It's reported that it already costs Channel 9 $40 mill just to broadcast cricket, that's on top of what it cost for the rights to broadcast)
It's also said that others in the team will get the flick. CA will come down hard on these guys.

What does Smith hope to gain by not resigning?
Had he fallen on his sword and said, “my decision, stupid and I take full responsibility and resign” then he may have received some small amount of sympathy and respect.
Instead his reputation is completely shot.

Those were the days in good old Blighty Played football in the winter & cricket from dawn till dusk in the summer ( very little litter on that street to hamper the fielders ! )

Not even sure cricket is currently the sport in our summer . Very rare to see kids playing on the park or spare land these days. If you do see them it tends to be Asian kids .

Commentators suggesting that Smith & Warner shouldn’t be on the pitch & that two subs should be in their place . Apparently Smith & Warner stepped down just for this match . I hope they aren’t trying to ride this out

I tend to agree with you Dave , better bowling , better batting and better fielding .

However and I wondered about this at the time , Jimmy ‘ king of swing ‘ Anderson couldn't seem to swing a thing in the Ashes series , whilst Starc was swinging it sideways.

OOT, in, it was the Kookaburra ball. Behave very differently to the Duke.
That's why in Sheffield Shield this year they are using Duke balls, to get up and comers used to the difference

Yep ball tampering has always happened . When I played Lancs League cricket our 2nd XI Captain used to raise the seam with a beer bottle top . I was always puzzled by the Atherton and dirt affair . Just trying to dry his hands , but rules are rules and the fine handed out

The difference between this current Aussie tampering and the rest is the obvious conspiracy behind it. A well thought out and premeditated plan to cheat from Captain , Vice Captain & senior players , getting a young rookie player to implement the plan .

Take your point on the Kookaburra v Duke and left v right , put it does put doubt in the mind . As I was reading your post , watched Philander hit Starc for 3 successive 4s

Stuart Broad , James Franklin ( ex NZ ) and Bumble questioning how the Aussie bowlers got such prodigious reverse swing in the Ashes .

Might be worthwhile doing some forensic examination of the coverage from that series .
