Chrissie, hells bells I still fancy her and she's older than me! well by a few months anyway. Most odd.
I like loads who are older than me. Alison Goldfrapp, Madonna, Blondie. And what about Laura Branigan ?. I know she is no longer with us but wow, I was a fan. Mrs will not know i have posted this.

I beg to differ ODB. Not the best vocalist for sure but Dylan was a prolific writer and wrote lots of stuff that others had hits with ....... Lay Lady Lay, Blowing in the wind, Hard rains are gonna fall, Times they are a changin, Mr Tambourine Man to name just a few.
The list of cover versions performed by stars and superstars of his material beggars belief! Check this lot out ........ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_artists_who_have_covered_Bob_Dylan_songs
Beatles, Elvis, Stones, Clapton, Neil Diamond, Roxy Music, Hendrix, Byrds, Bowie, Rod Stewart etc etc etc to eternity! Oh and one of your fave's Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders are also on that list.;)

Oh I’m not disputing he could write a song, but with a voice like a tortured cat he could have done a favour to the world of music by letting others sing his compositions.
😏

It is ARA. I'm probably in the minority but I preferred his own version of Mr Tambourine man to the Byrds version. Same with most tbh now I think about it ..... Like a rolling Stone, Times they are a changin, Hard rains etc

Bryan Ferry’s version of ‘ A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall ‘ is superb , as was his first solo album ‘ These Foolish Things ‘ which was full of covers and included that Dylan song .

I hadn’t heard Dylan’s version and when I did hear it , I was underwhelmed to say the least . A great writer and composer but I felt his singing was hit and miss.

Thanks for the reminder of that pal, my father had it on cassette many years ago and I loved it. I’ll find it on Apple Music if I can and if not I’ll order the CD.

It's debatable whether Dylan was a musician or a poet and whilst Bryan Ferry's version is much easier listening somehow the apocalyptical message doesn't get across.
Remember this imaginary conversation between God and Jesus was written by a kid! A 20 year old war baby who had been brought up during the 40's and 50's and no doubt influenced by fears based on Pearl Harbour, the effects of the atomic war on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the struggle against the spread of communism across the globe, the Korean war, the Cold war, Macarthyism, the beginning of the Vietnam war etc. This was written just after the Bay of Pigs and during the tense lead up to the Cuban Missile crisis. Dylan's version is so much more emotive and gets across the hopelessness and futility of those times for his generation than Bryan Ferry's 'popular' alternative. Maybe this version delivered clearly (and falteringly) by an emotional Patti Smith at the Nobel Peace Prize awards in 2016 (typically Dylan didn't attend) bridges the gap.
. Well worth a listen

What's Lucas Neill doing playing guitar behind Patti.
You had to have lived through those times to fully understand.

Without doubt Dylan’s lyrics in ‘ Hard Rains A Gonna Fall ‘ were deep , meaningful, and thought provoking . Just like the best writers / poets he communicated with creativity , imagination and feeling . I get that .

However when you decide to transfer those words into a song , then it’s the melody that takes over . Songs are created for communicating melody . Melody turns the words into something that’s pleasant to the ears . In a poem for example , it’s the words that are the main focus , in a song it’s the melody .

Dylan’s voice isn’t melodic , it grates on the ears and is particularly unpleasant . First time I’ve heard Patti Smith , but she’s not much of an improvement on Dylan 😉 Did she forget the words or is she just a good actress ? Just googled her and she wrote/ sang a song “ Smells Like Teen Spirit “ Are you a fan SLKS ?

Edit : apologies SLKS , just read that it’s by a group called Nirvana !

Her delivery is exceptionally clear though whereas Dylan mumbles and Ferry's delivery is secondary to the music which ultimately detracts from the lyrics. Lets be honest I don't believe Dylan intended Hard rains as a dance number did he? o_O
