Playing (Trump) Turnberry soon dave. I think snakes will be the last of my problems on the Ayrshire coast with a cold NorWester forecast.

Never saw any red bellied snakes dave, but a balmy spring day on Sunday saw my playing partner and I score 42 around the King Robert course on Sunday but unfortunately capitulate to a howling south west wind flecked with rain on Monday. The conditions screwed us both over on the Ailsa. A healthy 7 point lead over the pack on Sunday evaporated to see 5 points adrift and second place overall by Monday. Fair play to the winners who scored fairly poorly on Saturday but managed 40 points in a hoolie on Sunday.
Two rounds at Turnberry plus B&B in the magnificent 5* hotel less than £200 each (last week of winter rates).

Tiger Woods wins the Masters - his first major for over ten years.
After multiple operations and doubts that he would ever play golf again, coupled with the immense wealth and success that he had already amassed, it must take some determination and willpower to make a comeback like that.
Well done!

Not many saw that coming last week did they?

Definitely not.
Molinari will be having nightmares about putting those two shots into the water on the back nine.
I thought he would be able to hold onto his lead.

So after all that jingoistic blurb Rory fails to make the cut. So too does the resurrected Masters winner Tiger Woods. A timely reminder to all how golf can turn around and bite even the best on the arse at ANY time!
One player who rarely attracts the same hype and headlines as those two but who never seems to suffer the slings and arrows in the same way is the excellent Justin Rose. He seems to figure in the top 10 on just about every leader board.

Also and it's just an observation but viewing that leader board does make me wonder how europe over the past generation has enjoyed the whip hand over the septics in the Ryder Cup.

Congratulations to Shane Lowry Open Champion. Missed the cut in the last 4 Opens has led from the front this time. He held off the challenge from Lancashire's Tommy Fleetwood and prevailed through some horrific weather conditions. Weather tbh probably helped his cause as any hopes of a storming finish by the rest of the field were swept away by the wind and rain.

Just make sure you hand your card in correctly now Shane!!!

Well after a lifetime of playing football and cricket I’ve decided to have a bash at golf . Went on a ‘ Get into Golf ‘ course at Wilpshire Golf Club , joined up and am on the course for the first time on Wednesday morning .

Went for my 4th half hour lesson at the driving range this week and I bloody hate the game !!!!

Technical terms such as ‘ topping ‘ ‘ slicing ‘ and just being generally ‘rank ‘ describe my progress so far , so what sort of disaster awaits me on the course heaven only knows ! I hope the 40 golf balls I ordered yesterday arrive before Wednesday as I’m pretty sure I might need them !

Oh and another whinge , why does a set of left handed clubs cost more than right handed ?

Thanks for the encouragement Rovers95 , I guess things can only get better !

I’m normally right handed , but any sport that requires holding something with two hands , for some reason results in me being left handed - golf , cricket , baseball

Any time you want a round or some help ( not that I'm Rory McIllroy), just let me know.
Don't buy loads of balls I have a bucket full that would be fine.

OOT, as Rovers95 says, stick with it,
I played football up to my 60th and only took up golf to make up numbers with a group a few mates were with. Never had a lesson,
To say I was crap was an understatement. I would slice the ball with my drivers, but not my irons. The only thing I seemed to good at was putting. I can look at a green and be able to work out which way the ball will break and by how much.
Now, after 10 years or so, I've partially cured my slice, hitting the ball a little bit longer and whilst I duff a shot every now and then, I generally get round in reasonable order. Last thursday, I scored a nearest the pin, and ran second with 39 points.
You'll enjoy much frustration, learn some new swearwords, moments of satisfaction and the odd moment of elation. And that is only on one hole!
There will always be one shot that will bring you back for your next round, there's always the hope that your next round will be better than the last,

Best advice ever.......
Get good waterproofs and good shoes!
Then when playing keep your head down, your left arm straight, turn your hips making sure not to overswing on the back lift then swing slowly through the ball in the direction you want to hit it! DO NOT try to leather the ball as hard as you can and you'll be amazed how far you can hit it with an easy swing and how many times you 'knob it' by trying to muscle it with full power.
Watch the pro's (turn the stupid sound effects down) and by and large they swing their irons slow and easy too.

Then most importantly make sure that you tell the Mrs that a round of golf takes at least 5 hours!!!!;)

Gord, Remember OOT is a lefty.

other than that, and especcially the bold line, the advice is good.

Nooo. Don't say lefty Dave, it has a different connotation here now pal!

I had a session at the driving range at Salmesbury once. I think I may have substituted brute force for technical finesse but finished up straining the muscles in my right arm, I haven't tried anything to do with golf since.

Thanks Dave . Very similar to me . Played 5- aside until I was 58 , but got fed up of calf and hamstring injuries and younger guys who ran faster and tackled harder ! Thanks for the encouragement. I’ll stick at it and hope things start to get better .

Great advice Gord - just what my coach says and I try to take note . However as the shots get sliced and topped , the grip gets tighter , the swing gets quicker and I forget to keep my eyes on the ball . So many things to remember !

The wife still teaches full time so no problem being away for 5 hours plus ;)

Isn’t it great being a Brexit pensioner !
