The real Brexit thread

British exceptionalists get another poke in the eye.

This is what happens when you adopt the 'they need us more than we need them' negotiating position.

A cake! A cake! My kingdom for a cake!

What is the 'negotiating position' Benjie? All I've seen to date from the EU is tantamount to blackmail. When push eventually comes to shove, they'll capitulate. Same as it ever was!

You have to pay for quality journalism.

Here's the gist anyway.

EU Brexit negotiators have set out a tough line on financial services, ruling out an ambitious trade deal for the sector and arguing that Europe would benefit from a smaller City of London, according to confidential discussions among the other 27 EU member states.

In a rebuff to the UK, which is seeking to put financial services at the heart of a trade deal with the bloc, “there was a strong commission message that there would be no special deal,” said an EU diplomat briefed on the discussions. “The UK is being told from the beginning what the situation is.”

It's the same story I'm afraid, one that the 37% do not understand. The EU holds all the cards, and we have none.

Don't lose sight of the fact Benjie boy that of the EU 27, there's only half a dozen that truly hold any cards and they'll all capitulate eventually at the thought of losing out significantly as a consequence of a hard Brexit.

From the lords tonight

Tory peer Lord Blencathra says it is "nonsense" to say that a vote to leave the EU was not a vote to leave the single market and customs union.

He tells the House that "a government-funded propaganda sheet" sent to households before the referendum indicated that it would mean just that.

Lord Blencathra also says that remain supporters have said leave supporters want to imitate Singapore in "a race to the bottom" on regulations and standards.

Telling the House that Singapore has a GDP per capita of $53,000 and high living standards, he suggests that if that is the bottom, he wants to race there.

Why would they "capitulate" ? In the face of what exactly ?

I know that my posts on this topic are in danger of becoming repetitive. But, to make the point - yet again - we have a well briefed EU side having to remind a delusional May that “Brexit means Brexit”.

May has stated countless times before that we have voted to leave the single market and customs union, and the EU are kindly facilitating this. You and the rest of the Tory backwoodsmen should be celebrating!

As for Singapore, I regret to say that the 37% did vote to give the government a blank cheque to ruin the British economy, in the face of many warnings that this would be the case.

In the aftermath of Brexit the Tory party will be able to fulfil its long held desire to destroy the welfare state and turn the UK into a low tax, low wage sweatshop, like Singapore. I'm sure Grease Moog, Redwood & the elite will do well out of it, but I'm afraid the rest of us are screwed.

Singapore is not a sweatshop though JD, as can be seen with a GDP of 53k dollars per head, that’s nearly double the UK figure. It was 51.89 % who voted to leave, at least get the basics right John

Eighty per cent of housing in Singapore is subsidised by the government. And one on 4 of the population are immigrants.

How does that fit in with the Tory backwoodsmen dogma?

Going down the Singapore route is the dream of the right-wing organisations that want wealthy people to become even wealthier while turning the rest of Britain into a pound shop.

I'm fascinated to know why anyone from East Lancs, already impoversished by the actions of the right wing elite, would want to follow it ?

I know of one person that worked in Singapore. Sadly Brian died a few years back, but he let me know that working there helped him set up his family. He always acknowledged the benefit he got from working there.
Chris/John/Doris, if you've obviously never been to Singapore, for it is one of the cleanest cities in the world, where the inhabitants enjoy living there.

Take a trip John, it's only a 10 hour flight from the UK. It will open your eyes. People working for themselves, making money........

You don't get it do you? Like those silly sods on Question Time last week who appear to have been blin ded to reality by infantile indoctrination to decry and despise all wealthy people but yet who always look to those people first to pay for all public services. What do you think will happen to the rest of the population when you and your lot have driven the wealth makers away from these shores? Yours is simply the politics of envy John.
Here I know that your bitterness won't allow you to watch all this but watch from approc 1.05-1.20. As true today as it was back then.

I see the Greek quisling backed down in the Lords and withdrew his amendment for a second referendum. 1st stage passed by the Lords. The threat of taking away the cushy lifestyles seems to be having an effect

Mmmm, not sure about "wealth creators" (who?) but I'll certainly be glad to see the back of multitude of tax evaders, money launderers and other sundry crooks who have been using this country to hide their dirty money for decades.

This country needs a new government urgently. Watching the news tonight proves once again that Theresa May is a pathetically weak and directionless leader who is totally in hock to the hard-right Brextremist faction of her party.

And Steve Baker is not fit to be a government minister after the disgraceful and lunatic conspiracy theories about the civil service he was spewing in the House of Commons today.
