Left out Ryan Bertrand who actually played the majority of qualifiers. Granted they probably aren't in his eternal debt for that (probably would have managed to cope without him since his name isn't Superman or Allardyce ) but surely more deserving than Arnold? Might as well ask more players to ultimately retire from internationals early.

No Shelvey
Southgates slim chance of success has just turned into a fat chance. He obviously wants two untalented grafters in the middle who run around a lot...... very much like he was tbh. Isn't enough at that level.

More than anything in history, the fact that people still care about how England do in tournaments is a testament to the perseverance of the human spirit.

There are 540 trillion different ways to arrange 11 players out of 23 on a football pitch (gotta love combinatorics), and I can guarantee whichever way Southgate picks will result in woeful underperformance.

Another rubbish FA lap dog as manager and another 23 mentally pathetic specimens already half on their hols as players.

Beaten by Iceland with half a million population, finishing bottom of a group with Costa Rica in, Rooney's babyish rant about the fans after drawing 0-0 with Algeria. They will let us down again, its just a question of how and who this time.

Not normally the first to speak up for footballers (should note I don't care who wins it and preferably not England) but can't help thinking if that's the type of support you get why bother playing international football at all? Maybe they should all just quit and decide to represent their clubs solely from now on. You can't guarantee anything in a tournament though even if England win it hardly makes Southgate a great manager. That's the thing with tournaments there are instances like Spain of course but leagues are clearly the main barometer with an occasional anomaly like Leicester.

Rooney can hardly criticise though considering he stomped on someones testicles and most England fans blamed an opponent for the red card.

Asked about Hart's future prospects, he added: "I pick players on form and if he's playing well for his club, why wouldn't we select him?

Of Wilshere he said: "Jack had a good spell leading up to Christmas and just after, but was maybe not as effective towards the end of the season."

Hasn't Shelvey been starring of late?

Can't believe that no one's commented on this but I definitely don't agree with Harry Kane being made Captain. It's just like the England cricket selectors mistake of making your most talented player the team Captain. In defence of Southgate though there isn't another player either in defence or midfield who is guaranteed to play every game...... which is not a good indictment in itself.

Not many are arsed, we have seen it all before as the song goes. There is no fever building up to the world cup like normal because we fully expect to be on the first flight home.

Tunisia will be a struggle, 0-0 or 1-1
Panama, win 1 or 2 nil, fever increases
Belgium, heavy defeat, out plane back home after Tunisia hammer Panama.

Anyway beer is brewed and ready.

I think you are being overly pessimistic. I expect us to at least qualify from this group and possibly win it.

I don't see what was wrong with Henderson. Captained Liverpool to the Champions League final and has had a very good season. Another victim of the total inability of fans to appreciate the value of a holding midfielder.

A right winger/striker who mostly plays on the shoulder of the last defender carried a defensive midfielder? I'd like to see how that works, completely different jobs 40 yards away from each other on the pitch.

When you're in a team with Salah, Mane, Firmino, Oxlade-Chamberlain and 2 hugely attacking full backs, your job of breaking up and starting attacks is a gargantuan one. Like I said fans just have a blind spot on defensive midfielders, they're never appreciated. At Ewood they're usually scapegoat no. 1.
