Id just like to say cheers to Adam Wharton for signing his new contract. He showed these wannabe stars Brereton Rothwell Lenihan and Nyambe how to be a Gentleman.I for one hope he forfills his promise and goes all the way.Im sure we will see plenty of him at Ewood and Raya will have someone to go to Rovers matches with in the capital.Cheers Adam COYB

Well there he goes. £18 million up front with a further £4 million in add ons. Palace will sell for double that in two years. Yet the venkys refused £8 million for BBD a while back and he left for nothing. The venks are the worst thing to happen to our club ever.
I agree with this, pretty baffling to me. We gambled with Wharton, offered him a 5 year contract in September 2022 at a point where he'd started 2 games for the club. I'm sure it wasn't a high wage, but say it was £5k a week, that's a contract worth £1.25m, to an 18 year old who'd started 2 senior matches at the time. We got the gamble right obviously, but what's the point in doing that and then cashing in our chips 16 months later?

I do think that he's stood still this season. His passing game is still good but not great, and he's still a complete defensive liability, so there's the outside chance that he's already reached his level. Plenty of players become good Championship players and thats it (including the last guy we sold for £18m Adam Armstrong).

But I doubt it, he's 19, he'd have surely continued improving. We could have sold him in summer 2025 with 2 years still left on his contract, and he could have been worth £40m by then. So yeah, poor business for me.

It all depends on the add ons and also what we do with some of the money now.

I guess, but the other thing that disappoints me is us selling another home grown product before the Ewood faithful have really been able to enjoy them. Thanks to us locking Wharton into a 5-year contract, this should have been a Damien Duff situation, getting to see him really kick ass here before the big money move in his early 20s. Instead its a Phil Jones situation, a quick "here's what you could have watched" and then gone whilst still in his teens.

I hope its not a case of Wharton has started moaning about a move and we've just caved. How Daniel Levy dealt with Harry Kane should be the playbook for clubs on this sort of thing. It needs to stop being a heads we lose (don't tie a player into a long contract, so they leave for free), tails we lose (do tie them in, they moan, so we let them leave for a mediocre price). If the player signed the contract, that's on him and he's ours until we get an offer that's impossible to refuse. For me that's a £40m offer from the big 6, not an £18m one from Crystal Palace.

Unfortunately and unlike the DD and Jones sales I don't think from what I read that we are in a position to turn any sort of money down at the moment.

Well it looks like Adam has already facilitated the signing of a couple of players.

Should be a healthy sell-on fee to think about down the line. Something else to take into account.

Great lad to sign a five year deal with us. The lad has essentially saved us for a bit, financially. Gutted to lose such a good player, but I think it makes sense for us to get a few decent players in and keep the squad balanced and the club happy.

I'm still wondering if his agent had negotiated a %age of the fee.

Don't agree there. Wharton was 204 minutes into his career when we offered him that 5 year contract. He was literally offered about £1m based on bossing a crap Blackpool.

That's not him doing us a favour IMO, I'm sure his agent told him to snap our hand off. There's been plenty of players over the years who had a great first senior game and then amounted to not much, Jay McEveley had about 10.

We took a risk, got him on a long contract, and have sold him in the 2nd transfer window there was any interest. Poor from us if you ask me.

Good luck to the lad, but no surprise that him being a Rovers fan, living round here, having his brother at the club, being from a great family, playing at Wilpshire golf club or anything else fans seem to think make a difference, made no difference. He was off like a shot like they always are.

It's a short career b&wh.

Haha sorry. I think it's a semi coping mechanism for me to be honest. Claimed massive Rovers fan Phil Jones sodding off to United at the very first possible opportunity (at a time when about a quarter of Blackburn seemed to gloryhunt ManUre) felt symbolic to me about how nobody really gives a damn in modern football.

I don't blame these players. Drog is spot on, it's a short career. I've just had little inclination ever since to indulge in the narrative that these academy lads love Rovers and their dream is to pull on the blue and white halves.

Their dream is to play for the PL club of the academy they were at first in all likelihood. Before they ended up at Brockhall, I'm sure most were rejected by Man U/Man City/Liverpool at 8-12 years old or whatever. Their focus is the same Rovers as a stepping-stone to reach the top as every other pro-footballer.

So good luck to the lad, but we owe Adam Wharton as much gratitude as any other Rovers player with 44 appearances if you ask me. Derrick Williams for example had 138 appearances and was forgotten the second he left.
