Some rumours about a return for Jay Spearing. Left Bolton in the summer after contract negotiations broke down - by all accounts had a good season captaining Bolton to promotion from League One.

Maybe but does the squad really need another defensive midfielder? Smallwood seems to be the one hired for that job. Its league 1 and its not quite as essential a position as it is in the Premier League. Squad size and wages taken into account as well of course.

I know Mowbray wants another midfielder but not sure what specific position has been stated. Certainly feel another striker is what's needed (Nuttall probably isn't ready and he's too unproven even if Mowbray sees some medium-long term potential) more than anything else. If Graham gets injured that's possibly the biggest potential blow. Even if Samuel does well definitely need 2 strikers who are capable of a double figure tally in this league. Graham certainly is.

Listening to Radio Lancs last night, TM mentioned Evans, Smallwood, Whitingham were his central midfielders options and that Tomlinson had still a lot to learn. If he is thinking that is his only options in Central Midfield then he does require at least one more. He seems to have forgot that Mulgrew, Leninhan and Bennett have all played there as well.

Antonsson has officially signed on loan for the whole season. Don't know a great deal about him but Leeds purchased him for 2 million. By league 1 standards he may be very good but its a case of "wait and see" obviously as with Samuel. Anyway I'm glad that Mowbray has noted the need for another striker. Been told the club has definitely made an enquiry about Henderson.

Never heard of him but I'm glad it's a striker. We needed another in the squad. Mowbray said he was signing a midfielder so that could still be on and we still need another centre back. Beginning to take shape. I'm looking forward to going down to Ewood tomorrow.

Its no real surprise that a Middlesbrough player has joined on loan and someone from Celtic may follow. Like I've said there's no set rules for where clubs loan people out. Sometimes its about who you know and Chapman said people spoke highly of Mowbray. Seems he's also met him in the past though not sure whether more than sporadic occasions.

I would agree with that. It also gives us the option of sometimes playing Mulgrew in what I consider to his most effective position. centre midfield.
Leave Mulgrew where he is, at centre back, as centre midfield requires much more physically and Charlie is injury prone.

I would say that centre back requires more physically than centre midfield but I know you mean it slightly differently than I do. I am referring to bodily strength and I think you mean stamina so we have our own opinions. I feel that while Mulgrew is by far our most accomplished footballer I feel that he lacks a bit of strength and bulk for centre back and as you say he is a bit injury prone. I think he is more likely to be injured up against a big striker than playing in midfield but as I specified we need to sign another centre back before we have that option.

He will run almost twice as far in centre midfield than in defence, make more sprints, high speed running etc. This is a fact of the game these days and because of that his chances of getting injured increase dramatically. I would play him in a Pirlo role in a three as I think he'd be really useful sat in front of the 2 CB's as there outlet to avoid by passing midfield.

I understand what you mean IE he needs more strength to play CB than midfield but most injuries come from the running aspect as opposed to a strength consideration. Also we have no CB's so would need to buy a few to move him into midfield. Playing a brute alongside him may compensate for his lack of strength? The Motherwell Lad for example.

We must agree to differ on this but you strike a bit of common ground with the Pirlo role. I think that would be his ideal position if we sign another centre back.

That's not how it works Alan, I am right and you are wrong OK? That seems a better compromise to me....
