Yeah but Labour Councils always have that ready made excuse for failing to prioritise ............ austerity
Failing NHS, depleted armed forces, rising crime owing to police cuts, rubbish in the streets because of poor public services. Private wealth and public squalor. You voted for it.

3BD905D2-FDA2-43F1-A48C-1E07F6EDD2F9.png It’s amazing that we have an NHS , an army , a police force and public services after the socialist car crash of 2010 . The only positive was we didn’t have to go to the IMF with a begging bowl like we did last time

As Liam Byrne alluded to , socialism is great until you run out of other people’s money . Usually they don’t admit to it , but fair play to Liam for his honesty .

Anyway back to litter picking , I like one of the comments under the Telegraph article :

“ People have no pride anymore where they live and people think it's council's job to pick litter. People need to take a little pride and pick up litter where they live and keep their area tidy and keep Blackburn tidy “

Are you doing your bit BenJimJohn ?

Fantastic , well done sir . Hopefully this sort of voluntary work will spread around the town . It’s difficult to stop the litter louts dropping litter , the Council can’t pick it up 24/7 but public spirited guys like this can make a difference . Hope other residents of Mill Hill join in .

All we need is for people to have a little pride in their town and the area they live in .

I’ve never understood those who would simply drop litter. It’s like they have no pride in their community and no understanding of the knock on effects. The older I get the more I think the public stocks should be brought back for offenses like littering.

Well done to Iceland . More supermarkets would do well to follow their lead . These sorts of schemes should help reduce litter in the streets . Blackburn must be the litter capital of the UK . Also a real opportunity for people to pick up litter ( plastic bottles ) , exercise and get money off their shopping bill !

Oh no I've just described the socialist's nightmare - actually doing something to benefit yourself instead of expecting the Council to do it all for you !

Vote Tory and you get private affluence and public squalor.

The connection between austerity cuts to local public services and the increasingly disgusting litter mess that is the public face of Tory Britain is obvious.

Not spending money wastes money in the long term because the problem costs more to fix - but then the myopic right wing could never see past the end of its aquiline nose.

Hell it's a blessing that this guy, whoever he is, is not in charge of the public purse. the national debt and not to mention, taxation, would quickly be trebled!

Of course, how stupid of us - there was never a litter problem when Blair and Brown were in office

Superb whatabouttery.

Of course there's always been a litter problem - Britons have thrown rubbish out of windows on to the streets since Elizabethan times - but it's got significantly worse since austerity because it's no longer cleared up by the authorities. A few volunteers litter picking here and there won't solve the problem
