Leeds had more than their fair share though and in fact when Brian Clough went in as manager it is reported that he told the team to forget that they had won the league because they had won it by unfair tactics. He didn't last long but, as usual, Cloughie had it right.

A bit of a dude in his day by all accounts, RIP Mr Worthington, I forgive you for “that” goal.

Crikey he wasnt all that old was he? Reads like it might have been alzheimers. Always looked like a gypsy didn't he? Interesting that high blood pressure caused Liverpool to call off his signing yet he went on to play many more years at the top. Bit like Asa Hartford with his hole in the heart that never affected him. Maybe if that signing had gone through in '72 Liverpool might never have bought in KMD in '77. They brought Kenny in to replace Keegan but if Frank had been there they might have looked at other options. Sliding doors.

Former England and Ipswich centre forward Paul Mariner dies aged 68 | Daily Mail Online

Crikey! Poor old Paul Mariner, just as England finally get into a final. Brain cancer can't be a good way to go.
I rem him and Rafferty playing for Plymouth and giving us such a hard time in our promotion season. A Chorley lad who we should have spotted for ourselves.
On a comical note, if this is the right time and place for it I always thought he looked like the extra head on Zaphod Beeblebrox too.

Remember watching him at Chorley. Went to Plymouth about 1973. Too young.
I remember him as well. My Brother played with him as well as Micky Walsh. Our kid had a trial at Wolves (old 1st Division) whilst the other two had trials at lesser clubs; he didn’t bother with Wolves as he did not see much of a career, or money, in football 😂

Der Bomber's gone now! A great goal scorer but never ever a scorer of great goals. Knocked us out of the World Cup in Mexico '70 if my memory serves me correctly. Ravaged by dementia is seems.

Germany and Bayern Munich legend Gerd Muller dies aged 75 (msn.com)

Must say I never knew that back in the day he had an alcohol dependency too.

I think my second sentence would make a great epitaph on his headstone.

A great goalscorer who was unlucky to miss out on the 1966 World Cup final and one half of the Saint and Greavsie pair.
RIP Jimmy.

I'm amazed that he got to 81 after what he was like at one time with drink.
Just read this.... Tottenham said Greaves possessed "immaculate ball control, great balance and such composure in front of goal that he rarely spurned an opportunity". Bloody hell! How could we use a player like that right now!
