I agree with the chips and roasties bit Al. School mashed potato used to be awful but mash made with Maris Piper with sausage /liver and onions in a rich gravy is exceptional. I like also mash with smoked haddock and cheesy mash or even mustard mash. Potatoes are so variable, nothing wrong with a good baked potato whilst Dauphinoise potatoes are up with my favourites too.
btw.... In Lisbon a couple of months back and there's a brilliant eaterie down near the waterfront called Time Out Market. It's a food hall with refectory tables in the middle and all manner of food stalls around the outside. You can virtually buy food from all around the world there. I had a traditional portugese dish of Octopus tentacles on a bed of mash with spinach, really superb it was. Wife and daughter chose asian and they loved it too. If you visit Lisbon you HAVE to eat here! The only drawback is the scramble for seats at a table as many people are scanning the diners to see who is leaving next.
