Joanna Lumley on at 9pm tonight re India.

I cannot stand her but I am told I should watch it. I fancy a trip to India next year (bucket list) to 'do' some work f the hill railways and also Kerala.
India is fascinating and Joanna Lumley presents it quite well. Paul O'Grady is doing a similar programme which you may prefer.

I worked in aldershite for 3 months and the hate for her is indescribable. She fought for the gurkas families to live there and won .
The "family" included they reckon was aunts ,cousins, next door neighbour and anyone they said hello to.
The result is a tension filled town with no go pubs for non Nepalese . They run arcades deal drugs and other stuff. Then 2 miles away there is Ash ( I think ) which is a gypsy town and whilst we were there the landlord of our pub/digs warned us of a fight in town ...locals , Nepalese and gypsies had a huge scrap.

On another note .I shall avoid this thread because I'm off to Zante on 26th so will catching up with GOT after that and don't need spoilers..dragon lady could be Mrs Abbey the 4th ha

Not exactly Abbey but Idris Elba was being widely touted as the next James Bond at one stage.

I don't see how scrapping the license fee would help. Instead we would just get adverts and more shite with Evans then getting paid double what he is now.

Personally, I think they should just sack the top 2 earners (seriously £1.75M for Lineker for an hours work per week for 30 weeks?!?) and let newer talent move up.

If the "Talent" are in demand, let them F off to the competition. The world didn't end when Wossy was sacked and moved over.

The licence fee is a compulsory tax that allows this politically biased & bloated organisation to continue to pay these liberal luvvies obscene salaries . Lineker is a case in point. I object to my money being used to subsidise his lifestyle . The salaries are pretty good lower down the scale too if my friend's wage who works in HR for the BBC is anything to go by .

I rarely watch the BBC and I don't have a nostalgic attachment to it . I therefore don't see why I should be obliged to pay this out of date tax so I can watch other channels .

I dislike paying my full Sky Sports subscription ( as I just want to watch the cricket although that's changing now ) which contributes to the salaries of grossly overpaid & overhyped premier league footballers , but at least I have a choice on whether or not I want to pay it & won't be branded a criminal if I don't

Yes I understand that , but I can cancel sky sports at any time. I'm happy for the BBC to keep the licence fee , just don't make it compulsory to pay it, in effect turn it into a subscription channel

Which is why I say the "top talent" at the BBC should be removed and give newcomers a chance. There should be a pay cap at the BBC and no "talent" should go over that. Granted, as shown with Graham Norton, there are ways around things like that. He gets more pay through his production company so his pay for the main Friday show are not even taken into account.

I still prefer no adverts to any of the dross that ITV and Sky put out.

I rarely watch any programs when they are scheduled. Just record everything and watch it when it suits me.

That way you can just FF past the adverts :)

Much of the TV I watch these days is on catch up anyway , so adverts aren't as annoying as they used to be and if you're watching live on Sky+ you can pause when the adverts come on and then fast forward to catch up .

Pay caps sound good in theory but I'm not so sure how they'd work in practice , the nearest we've had to pay caps were the incomes policies in the 1970s which proved to be unworkable and pretty disastrous . Your point Biddy , about moving on the likes of Lineker , Norton and Evans , to make way for up and coming " talent " is a good one and I'd like to see more of that .

The problem with the BBC is in reality it's a nationalised institution with a guaranteed income . It's therefore difficult to change entrenched attitudes in a culture that typically looks after its staff ahead of the interests of its customers.

You've just described the NHS!
