A very poignant sentence Drog - superbly put

To think he was just 18 when Rovers played that fantastic Man City team in February 1969 , when , on more than one occasion and in your words , “ Stuart went past their left back with ease and left him standing “

Great memories .

Bitterly cold night and a 5th round FA CUp tie that had been postponed time and again. Mekky tied Glynn Pardoe's (he's passed away too) legs in knots numerous times in the opening exchanges. We went 0-1 down and in the second half he skinned him again and crossed a perfect ball for Jim Fryatt to head us level (I can still hear the SLAP as he headed that ball into the net. 1-1. Unfortunately that leveller kick started City (who that year were League Champions) into action and from that moment the Rovers hardly had a kick. FT 1-4. No disgrace as City went on to win the Cup that year too.
Bit of a City bias but I found this from that night. https://www.citytilidie.com/latest/blackburn-away-fa-cup-5th-round-196869/

btw 42315 Is still the biggest Ewood crowd that I've ever been in (I'm certain the Rovers lied about the attendance because Ewood's record of over 62000 was over 20000 more! God only knows where they could have squeezed them in. Obviously the building of the Blackburn End had made a difference but surely not that much!

Nicely put Drog. 👏👏

I went along to Ewood today to watch the coffin pass. There were about 50 people there to pay their respects. RIP
I almost did that too BB, then I considered watching the hearse pass from outside of Pleasy changing rooms and in the end drove up to the Crematorium where I discovered quite a crowd including lots more 'old heads' from Witton 'Academy' and Blackburn's vibrant 70's / 80's amateur and semi pro football scene. Some damned good players there too in their own right.

Only 22 allowed in the Crematorium but amongst the ex-pros I spotted there was Duggy, Faz, Kevin Hird (I think), Malcolm Darling, Phil Hammond, Beamo, Gordon Taylor, Paul Round and probably Stuart's oldest pal John Kenyon. The service lasted about an hour as 5 people gave eulogies. The speaker system outside the Crem isn't the best (shame on the Council after 6 months of limited numbers being allowed inside) but I listened to Gordon Taylor and Beamo delivering plenty of warm words whilst l think Paul Round's was the most heartfelt and best delivered. Paul I think it was who confirmed Bill Shankly's approach for him plus Mekky's intense dislike of Bob Stokoe who came in as Carlisle Manager after Bobby Moncur had signed Stuart).
Perhaps I shouldn't crib but the most out of place eulogy was delivered by self confessed football ignoramus Gary Womack ( who can forget him with his buttocks hanging out of those S&M cowboy trousers on Come dine with me?) He and Mekky had become great tennis playing friends in relatively recent times.

Glad I went as I was able to get probably the saddest football 'programme' of my collection.

A couple more pics...........

btw bottom left only looks like he was kicking the ball with his left foot! Must have been digitally re-mastered.

Crikey thats a surprise. Him and Shilton virtually shared goalkeeping duties with England for many years. No doubt lots will disagree but I actually had him down as the better keeper.

Who Des? I know he used to play for Northampton but I didn’t know he was a keeper?

Crocodile tears all over the press and media today as Argentina goes into 3 days of national mourning. Kin ell! There'll be masses of crowds around until he's planted and no doubt a big spike in Covid cases the week after.

The type of footballer who if he plays against your team he’s a villain , but if he plays for your team he’s a hero .

Speedie, Batty, Dickov, Todd, Bellamy, EHD and Sav! We loved em all didn't we? In fact if we had em now it'd be 'whose coming up with us'?

Agree with you in general but I never could stand "Spit the dog" and never wanted him in my team.

Still a bloody good player though who would fit on the left perfectly in the current team. He actually became a real fans favourite with the barmy away army and the Blackburn End crew. I liked his application.
Sometimes these overseas players struggle to come to terms with our culture don't they? Suarez in particular got a reputation for biting plus he got in all sorts of bother for calling Evra a 'negro' despite the fact that he is Uruguayan and his first language is Spanish. Doesn't suit our sensibilities (or rather the FA's and the BeeBs) but seemingly not really an issue in South America.

Diouffy was an amazing player who only ever lost possession of the ball if he was fouled but he gained us a free kick in the process. I also believe he always sent a large proportion of his wages back home to Senegalese charities.
