So.... Feeling rather foolish as the last time I went to a rock concert the date began with 197? I took in the rock legends that are the Rolling Stones at Old Trafford last night.
After an excellent warm up (warm being the operative word as it was stifling and airless in OT last night) by Richard Ashcroft of Verve fame the Stones took to the stage at 8.20. Two hours non stop rock music (with a little bit of blues chucked in for good measure) in a hot and sweaty Old Trafford by a band with a combined age by this time next year of 300 years! Incidentally 3 is a good number and stones is a relevant word because I'd imagine the combined weight of the true Fab Four is about 30 stones with their instruments thrown in! How the hell they stay so emaciated after living the high life for over 50 years is beyond me given that I'm about 3-4 stones over my 'fighting weight' in my 20's. Keith Richard came out with the line of the night when he said to the audience "Great to be in Manchester tonight!" and followed up with a sardonic and almost rueful "in fact it's great to be anywhere!" I guess the lines in their faces bear testament to their past excesses. No idea how they've all got hair either although I guess that's so much easier to fake. I saw them in the same city in '73 and I have to say that the only thing that's changed in all that time appears to be me.... oh and thousands of others like me! Who said drugs are bad for you?

Anyway the original insolent, defiant and moody boys from South London who caused thousands of parents many 'lock up your daughters' moments band really are amazing. Jagger in particular ever the front man and the showman was never still (apart from when he took a rest for a couple of numbers by Richards), he must have spent more energy and covered more ground prancing, pouting and dancing the length and breadth of that 40 yard stage than Paul Pogba exerted all last season! And I really mean that!
I've a feeling this could be the last tour as the Rolling Stones. Not rocket science given their age is it? Charlie Watts at 77 in particular must be tiring of the effort.

This is probably better than reading any more of my ramblings* ...........

*If I had to pick a favourite from last night it would prob be Midnight Rambler.

“I'm about 3-4 stones over my 'fighting weight' in my 20's“

Thought you were older than that or is that a typo/wishful thinking.

I thought everyone knew how Keith Richards is still around

I know it's probably the most popular song amongst us non - Stones fans but Satisfaction is my favourite . When it comes on I always end up singing .

" I can't get no sex in Blackburn "

My eldest brother ( he's 67 now) used to sing it in his bedroom when he was a teenager to annoy my Dad ! Not sure if he picked those lyrics up from his nights at the Cav !

Satisfaction is my favourite Stones track but I favoured the Beatles over the Stones.

 Wash your mouth out with soap Al!

Reason being I can listen to most 60's and 70's Stones stuff but there's only a few Beatles tracks that I can be bothered to listen to. btw most of em feature Lennon's vocals. Can't abide Paul McArtney.

Satisfaction was the finale.

btw my mates had a disco back then and they used to bellow 'I can't get no... sex in Blackburn' when playing Satisfaction as their trade mark.
Couple missing last night from the very early days 'not fade away', and 'come on' which I place near the top of my list.

On thing I do rem of the Stones back in the day was that when every group seemed to be singing about nice girlfriends and love stories there was a whole string of their tracks dedicated to the complete opposite when relationships sour. "Out of time", "Heart of Stone", "you'd better move on", "All over now", "Play with fire". "Time is on my side" etc.

That's great to hear . Whenever I'm out and there 's a dj/disco in a pub / bar and I've had a few , I always request Satisfaction and then bellow out " I can't get no sex in Blackburn " .

We were once in Apotheca in the Northern Quarter after the Lancs v Yorks T20 game a couple of years ago , we had the whole top end of the pub singing . ' I can't get no ..............sex in Blackburn ' !
